"In this ever-changing society, the most powerful and enduring brands are built from the heart. They are real and sustainable. Their foundations are stronger because they are built with the strength of the human spirit, not an ad campaign. The companies that are lasting are those that are authentic". ~ Howard Schultz, Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time . The Feynman Learning Technique is a simple way of approaching anything new you want to learn. . Why use it? . Because learning doesn’t happen from skimming through a book or remembering enough to pass a test. . Information is learned when you can explain it and use it in a wide variety of situations. . The Feynman Technique gets more mileage from the ideas you encounter instead of rendering anything new into isolated, useless factoids. . When you really learn something, you give yourself a tool to use for the rest of your life. . The more you know, the fewer surprises you will encounter, because most new things will connect to something you already understand. . Ultimately, the point of learning is to understand the world. . But most of us don’t bother to deliberately learn anything. We memorise what we need to as we move through school, then forget most of it. . As we continue through life, we don’t extrapolate from our experiences to broaden the applicability of our knowledge. Consequently, life kicks us in the ass time and again. . To avoid the pain of being bewildered by the unexpected, the Feynman Technique helps you turn information into knowledge that you can access as easily as a shirt in your closet. . Let’s go. *** The Feynman Technique “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius—and a lot of courage—to move in the opposite direction.” —E.F. Schumacher There are four steps to the Feynman Learning Technique, based on the method Richard Feynman originally used. We have adapted it slightly after reflecting on our own experiences using this process to learn. The steps are as follows: Pretend to teach a concept you want to learn about to a student in the sixth grade. Identify gaps in your explanation. Go back to the source material to better understand it. Organise and simplify. Transmit (optional). . Or, click on link to Blog in bio and search 'think better' . In his essay 'On the Happy Life', Seneca makes an extended list of rules for living a good life. Because it is everyone’s wish to live better, he says, but we are often in the dark on how to do so. . Except, we’re not… since so many people have struggled in the dark before us, and their experiences create light. . With that in mind, here are some rules that have helped me live better based on my own experience, the advice I’ve been given and the things I’ve studied. . Your mileage may vary, but hopefully some of these will help you in your own pursuit of living a good life. . 1. Forget about outcomes—focus on making a little progress every day. . 2. Say no (a lot). . 3. Read something every day. . 4. Don’t watch television news. . 5. Comparison = unhappiness . 6. Journal. . 7. Strenuous exercise every most days. . 8. Get up when you fall/fail. . 9. Don’t argue with reality (facts) you don’t like. . 10. It’s not about routine but about practices. . 11. Do your job—whatever it is—well, because how you do anything is how you do everything. . 12. What’s a book that changed your life? is a question you can ask to change your life… if you read the books. . 13. Do at least 5000 steps everyday. . 14. The present is enough. . 15. Fuel the habit bonfire. . 16. Make time for philosophy. . 17. Don’t just read—you must read to lead. . 18. Collect little sayings about how to live . 19. Follow the 80/20 rule, Pareto's principle . 20. Spend time with old people. . 21. When evaluating an opportunity, ask yourself: What will teach me the most? . 22. Read biographies—the best way to study the lives of the greats. . 23. Don’t try to beat other people, try to be the only one doing what you’re doing (“Competition is for losers”). . 24. Know why you do what you do. . 25. Be strict with yourself and set high standards for others but forgive them when they do not reach them. . 26. Cut toxic people out of your life—life is too short. . 27. Don’t wait until later, do the thing now. . 28. No day without some deep reflection . 29. Put yourself up for review (Interrogate yourself). . 30. Always stay a student.

"I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed" ~ @MichaelJordan . Happy Birthday Michael Jordan! . He may have missed 9,000 shots in his career, but he scored 32,292 points in regular season play placing him fourth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, and Kobe Bryant. . His total of 5,987 points in the playoffs is the highest in NBA history. . Jordan led the NBA in scoring in 10 seasons (NBA record) and tied Wilt Chamberlain’s record of seven consecutive scoring titles. . His 8,772 free throw attempts are the ninth-highest total of all time. . Jordan holds the NBA records for highest career regular season scoring average (30.12 points per game) and highest career playoff scoring average (33.45 points per game) . The point is you have to take the shot to score, sometimes you may miss, but if you do not take the shot you definitely will not score. . Michael Jordan may have lost 300 games, but he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls in 1991, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a “three-peat”. . Although Jordan abruptly retired from basketball before the beginning of the 1993–94 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball, he returned to the Bulls in March 1995 and led them to three additional championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998, as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 NBA season. . He may have missed the game winning shot 26 times but with the Chicago Bulls, he decided 25 games with field goals or free throws in the last 30 seconds, including two NBA Finals games and five other playoff contests. . The point is to be successful, you have to take chances and not be afraid of failure.
"I guarantee that if you manage to start a habit and keep sticking to it, there will be days when you feel like quitting. . When you start a business, there will be days when you don't feel like showing up. . When you're at the gym, there will be set that you don't feel like finishing. . When is time to rock armour there will be days when you don't feel like typing. . But stepping up when it's annoying or painful or draining to do so, that's what makes the difference between a professional and amateur." ~ @jamesclare, 'Atomic Habits' . This end sentence was also echoed in a recent book I've read by @steven_pressfield, 'The Art of War: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles'. . What separates a pro from a dabbler is turning up everyday and putting in the work. .
