The gut is home to trillions of microbes and bacteria, many of which play an important role in our overall wellbeing. These good bacteria aid with digestion, absorption and the production of vitamins and hormones. Gut health is also tied to mental health, as neurotransmitters that help regulate moods are produced in the gut. It's important to keep these little guys happy and well fed! When it comes to gut health here are 6 that I like to consume: yogurt, miso, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha and peppermint. Yogurt—good for the gut since it contains probiotics that promote healthy digestion. 100 grams. No sugar! Miso—the fermented soybean paste which adds great flavor to soups and stews; it's also a great source of probiotics and great to use in a dressing too. Kimchi—since I am in Korea, how can I not appreciate the spicy cabbage dish that's high in fiber? Sauerkraut—fermented cabbage high in vitamin C along with other vitamins and minerals; I love it on a sandwich or next to an egg scramble. Kombucha—a sweet fizzy fermented tea with live cultures that aids with digestion. Peppermint - can be added to salads or consumed as tea. It relaxes the muscle of the bowel wall and thus helps with any cramps or bloating. As you can tell, I like us having a great gut health.
