Sunday Stir #11 - Job Boards, Mars, Emergency Funds, Nature

Feb 07, 2021 10:56 pm

Happy Sunday! Another week has passed. I'm almost finished with the article about vitality. I wasn't able to work on it for several weeks and when I finally revisited it, I didn't like what I had written. So I'm rewriting it. It SHALL be done by the Valentine's Day, that's my goal! I'm about to finish about 3 books so I'll be posting the notes to those books this month as well. One of them, I'm not even going to finish because I felt like it wasn't saying much and I was wasting my time. However, I will post the big takeaways from it.

Alrighty, on to the Stir!

--------------------------

The World of Job Boards

Most job postings suck! I've written several and it's not easy to be clear and realistic about what you're looking for. Usually in the first draft, you list a ridiculous amount of requirements and realize you're looking for someone who doesn't exist — a unicorn. Someone who can do everything. However, if you've spent any time looking at job posting sites, you've definitely seen many that are either vague or not inspiring. You read and think "So what would I be doing actually?" Take for example this one posted by Jeff Bezos in the early days of Amazon.

Would you have applied? I sure as heck would not have applied.

The World of Space

Our solar system and universe will always be a source of endless awe for humans. It's breathtaking! Below is a picture of a "mountain" (if you could even call it that) on Mars.

"Mars’s Olympus Mons is three times the height of Everest and has a footprint the size of Arizona. Must be some pretty intense cliffs along that sharp edge."

What a sight it would be to see that colossal mountain!

The World of Savings

I really like this graphic and breakdown how much emergency savings you should ideally have. It's not a one-size fits all piece of advice like "6 months of expenses saved!"

Your number will change based on your life situation. Do you have a kid? Probably should have more saved than somebody who's single. Are you in a line of work that could be disrupted? Would you be among the first to be fired? Is it your only source of income? All circumstances that should be taken into account when you're trying to create a safety net. The only thing that is true across the board is...you should definitely have an emergency fund.

The World of Wisdom

"Ours is a clever generation, not a wise one. Shelves of self-help books now dot the book selling landscape, proffering advice on how to rectify every problem that arises in life and relationships. But our parents and grandparents never had self-help books or other aids. Was it because they weren’t interested in personal growth? Or was it because they were wise and took preemptive action to forestall problems they knew might later arise, while we conduct our lives and relationships on a crisis to crisis basis? We are firefighters while they were town planners." - From the book, Kosher Lust

End Note

Are you looking for some book recommendations? I'd love to give you some. And as always if you've enjoyed the Sunday Stir, I'd love it if you shared it with a friend or two. You can send them here to sign up. I hope you're enjoyed this episode.
