Sunday Stir #17 - NFTs, COVID data, Candy Bars, Frogs

Mar 22, 2021 4:01 am

Happy Sunday! If you didn't see from last week' episode, I've got 2 new book notes up on my website. And I've got another short and sweet episode for you today.

Alrighty on to the Stir!

The World of NFTs

NFT - say what? Non-fungible token. I have no idea what it is but it's all the rage this month. People are making millions selling "digital art." With that as some context, the guy who went viral a couple of months ago for longboarding, drinking cran-raspberry and lip syncing to a Fleetwood Mac song is selling his video as an NFT. And guess for how much? Starting bid is $500k. He plans to use the money to buy his parents a home and fund a new event center in his hometown, Idaho Falls.

Next week, I might put some effort into explaining what an NFT and why people think it's valuable.

The World of COVID Stats

Wow, another one on COVID. I promise, I'll stop soon. Different states had different responses to the COVID pandemic — generally speaking blue states went into extremely strict lockdowns resulting in kids being out of school, small businesses getting obliterated, and people slowly losing their minds. And several red states like Florida took a very different approach and kept things open as best as they could.

I found this tweet from a guy examining the data of which approach was more effective.

We blew it, hard. California COVID death rate: 0.146% Florida COVID death rate: 0.155% These numbers are statistically tied. Yet, FL's economy is open, kids are in school, Disney World entertaining tourists. CA's business are closed & kids are depressed and falling behind.

As the numbers continue to come in and the data gets more clear, we'll be able to look back and know which approach was more effective or at least, which approach did the least amount of damage - health wise, economically, mentally.

The World of Advertising

These candy bars packaging are absolutely genius. The TBWA\Paris campaign shows how Le Chocolat des Francais bars "only keep the best of France". This is the type of stuff that marketing and advertising nerds drool over.

imageIt's all about how you frame things! Who would have thought that a candy company could express such a comedic and honest social critique?

The World of Wisdom

"A frog in a well does not know the great sea." Japanese Proverb

We don't know what we don't know.
