Sunday Stir #34 - Tipping, Inflation, Metabolism, Health Tracking

Happy Sunday! I'd love it if you shared it with a friend or two. You can send them here to sign up. Got some goodies for you in this episode, so let's dive in without further ado.

On to the Stir!

The World of Tipping

Tipping is a good thing and it incentivizes the people serving you. But why do we tip for certain things and not for others? When you think about it, it's kind of arbitrary.

"Get a drink at the airport: must tip bartender.
Drink on a flight: don’t tip flight attendant.
Grocery bagger, no tip.
Grocery delivery, tip.
Weird how these things turned out, especially since tips subsidize wages paid by the employer.

UPS delivery: no tip.
Door Dash delivery: tip is so essential it's the default in the app.
Lots of these things we don’t even question." /source

One thing is for certain though, in certain industries (where we just tip because that's what you do) like at restaurants, if you don't tip, the service will be horrible. Go to Europe where people don't tip at bars or restaurants and you'll see how just bad the service is. It's atrocious (according to my friend's who have lived in Europe).

The World of Inflation

The dollar is losing its value and has been for a long time. The government prints money like it's toilet paper, and it devalues the dollar. It's why conservatives are typically against printing more money because it's a short term solution that ends up bad in the long run. The money you do have becomes worth less. Check this out:

The cost of living in 1971:
Average rent: $150/month
Gasoline: $0.40 per gallon
New car: $3,560
New house: $25,200
Harvard tuition: $2,600 per year

We devalued the dollar and now everything is a lot more expensive 50 years later. My dad used to buy a hamburger in the 50's for a quarter. Think about that. /Source

The World of Health Hacking

I've come across 2 wearable health hacking technology products recently.

  1. is Lumen. Basically you blow into it and it will tell you if you're burning carbs or fat in that moment. Why is that useful? It helps you understand your metabolism and what you should eat. It tells you how you should adjust your nutrition throughout the day. Maybe you're about to workout but don't have a lot of energy. It will tell you to eat something so you have energy for the workout.
  2. is Whoop. Whoop is something you wear all the time. It tracks your sleep, your recovery, and your energy levels. It will show you how recovered your body is from a workout and how much you should exert yourself in today's workout. This one looks awesome and acts like a personalized coach who is monitoring every aspect of your health for optimal performance. Probably unnecessary for a sedentary person, so it's not for most people. But if you are actively trying to improve your health, or are training for something, this could help a lot. People like NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes and pro golfer Justin Thomas have endorsed it.

I haven't bought either but I'm considering giving both a try. If I do, I'll let you know what I think about them.

The World of Wisdom

Time for a Chinese proverb - "Three Men Make a Tiger":

"Your Majesty, if someone were to tell you that there was a tiger running in the street, would you believe it?"
"No." The king replied.
"If two people were to tell you there was a tiger running in the street, would Your Majesty believe it? "
"I might suspect it, " the king said hesitatingly, "but I wouldn't believe it. "
"What if three people were to tell you that?"
After thinking for a while, the king said, "Yes, I would."

People have a tendency to accept absurd information as long as it is repeated by enough people.

End Note
