Sunday Stir #10 - Career Advancement, Richest Company Ever, GameStop

Jan 31, 2021 9:26 pm

Happy Sunday! We've reached our tenth week of consecutive episodes. I'm proud of this accomplishment. I knew it would be hard to consistently send one every Sunday (especially with a newborn). But alas, here it is!

On to the Stir!

----------

The World of Careers

Sometimes ambitious people will continue working in a career or industry even if they hate it and don't see themselves doing it long-term. They end up spending several years climbing the wrong hill. It's wrong, because they didn't really want to be climbing it to begin with.

"He knows (or at least believes) he wants to end up at the top of a different hill than he is presently climbing. He can see that higher hill from where he stands.
But the lure of the current hill is strong. There is a natural human tendency to make the next step an upward one. He ends up falling for a common trap highlighted by behavioral economists: people tend to systematically overvalue near term over long term rewards.
When you find the highest hill, don’t waste any more time on the current hill no matter how much better the next step up might appear."

If you know you want to leave the career path you're on now, start taking steps to get to the hill you actually want to climb. If you're in a job or career that you know you don't want to be doing long term, make sure you're taking practical steps now so that 10 years from now you're where you want to be.

The World of Valuable Companies

Do you know what is the most valuable company of all time? It was more valuable than the top 20 companies of today combined. Lots a lot of $MUALA$.

The Dutch East India Company is most easily understood as a trading company or a shipping company. However, it was more like a global supply chain corporation. Pretty incredible that 400 years later, there still hasn't been a company to top this valuation. *Also this graphic was done in 2017, so that numbers and companies listed would change if it was updated for 2021.

The World of Stocks

You've probably heard by now about the GameStop stock frenzy. Here's a thread explaining what happened exactly. It's an interesting thread because it was written the day before the stock exploded even more and the news of this went viral. The stock went so absolutely bonkers that several huge trading platforms blocked people from buying shares of GameStop which in my opinion is illegal. Why don't you let people invest their money how they want?

"If you're out of the loop - this is the (hilarious) story of a subreddit (wall street bets) taking down a multi-billion dollar hedge fund... get your popcorn ready Popcorn. The hero of our story: a user named DeepFuckingValue bought $50k of call options in GameStop ($GME) that has turned into a $13M+ win in ~3 months. He's a part of the subreddit r/WallStreetBets, a group of degenerate gamblers that I love."

The World of Proverbs

"Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare." - Japanese Proverb

“Lies travel faster than the truth.” - Thomas Shelby, Peaky Blinders
