Sunday Stir #7 - Censorship, AI, Making Money Online, Unbelievable Creatures

Happy Sunday! Censorship is alive and well unfortunately. I won't be talking about any of the big news from last week this time around but perhaps next week talk about Big Tech censorship and free speech. This year has proven to me (via lockdowns and censorship) that people are surprisingly ok with totalitarianism. Average people think it doesn't matter to them until it's too late and directly affecting them. But all of our rights are slowly being encroached upon.
Anyways, on to the Stir!
---------------
The World of Scientific Discovery
This title really caught my attention - "Science has outgrown the human mind and its limited capacities." Very interesting article and something out of my normal wheelhouse.
The Challenge:
Science is in the midst of a data crisis. Last year, there were more than 1.2 million new papers published in the biomedical sciences alone, bringing the total number of peer-reviewed biomedical papers to over 26 million. However, the average scientist reads only about 250 papers a year. Meanwhile, the quality of the scientific literature has been in decline. Some recent studies found that the majority of biomedical papers were irreproducible.
The Solution:
One promising strategy to overcome the current crisis is to integrate machines and artificial intelligence in the scientific process. Machines have greater memory and higher computational capacity than the human brain. Automation of the scientific process could greatly increase the rate of discovery. It could even begin another scientific revolution. That huge possibility hinges on an equally huge question: can scientific discovery really be automated?
Basically teach AI to use Francis Bacon's Scientific Method. I'm not a huge proponent of AI and think it's overhyped but maybe that's because I don't really understand it. If the hype is true, I'm more terrified of it than excited by it.
The World of Making Money
Have you heard of 1,000 true fans? Kevin Kelly made the idea popular by proposes that online creators could make a living by getting 1,000 true fans to pay them $100 per year. This article argues that it's actually possible to only have 100 true fans that pay you $1,000 per year.
Sound unlikely? We’re already seeing this shift, according to creator platforms. Since 2017, the share of new patrons paying more than $100 per month—or $1,200 per year—has grown 21 percent. On the online course platform Podia, the number of creators earning more than $1,000 in a month is growing 20 percent each month, while the average number of customers per creator is growing at a rate of 10 percent. Likewise, on Teachable, the average price point per class offering has risen roughly 20 percent, year over year. In 2019, nearly 500 Teachable course creators made more than $100,000; of those, 25 averaged more than $1,000 per sale.
The World of Unbelievable Creatures
Check out this Altas Moth. It has an absolutely incredible defense mechanism - look like a terrifying pair of snakes.
The World of Great Tweets
@sweatystartup Books are overrated. Conversations are underrated. Experience is how you learn but it’s not necessarily how you get better.
@sweatystartup Most thought leaders and influencers spend 99% of their time trying to sound smart. They purposely make things too complicated. You’re often better off getting advice from your grandfather.
@sweatystartup Having kids is underrated. Every 60 year old I know cares about one thing and one thing only: Their kids and grandkids. Make the sacrifice now to reap the rewards later.
@sweatystartup Providing for your family goes way beyond money. Love and attention are often more strongly desired than food and water. Be present and explore, play and get to know your family on a deep level. Create a bond. And reap the rewards forever.
The World of Proverbs
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. - Proverbs 18:2
