Sunday Stir #46 - Lifespan, Hermits, Work Smarter

Nov 22, 2021 6:31 am

Happy Sunday! Noting to update you on this week so let's dive in.

On to the Stir!

The World of Human Lifespans

Do you think we live longer than our ancestors did? Because of modern medicine, nutrition, and technology, it would seem so. But we're not actually living longer than our ancestors. Instead, what has happened is that more people than ever before are now able to reach maximum lifespan and live healthier lives overall. In the West, child mortality is extremely low. We've made extraordinary advances in helping more people reach old age. We've increased life expectancy (which is an average) but not lifespan.

The World of Living off the Land

For almost 40 years Ken Smith has lived without electricity or running water in a hand-made log cabin on the banks of a remote loch in the Scottish Highlands.

"It's a nice life," says Ken. "Everybody wishes they could do it but nobody ever does."

You can read more about him and how he did it. There's also a BBC documentary on him but you have to use a VPN to be able to watch on BBC's website.

The World of Wisdom

We need to redefine "hard work" to include "hard thinking."

The person who outsmarts you is out working you.

The person who finds shortcuts is out working you.

The person with a better strategy is out working you.

Usually, the hardest work is thinking of a better way to do it. /source
