Instagram LogoThis Frozen Bark tastes amazing on a hot day - or any day for that matter! It's a firm favorite as a 'Treat' in our house! You can see in this video I have my kids chopping - I have always been a little nervous with them using sharp knives but it is a great way to start promoting some responsibility to them whilst cooking. Start with soft fruit and nothing with too much of a rounded edge, my youngest is 7 and she is happy doing banana and soft fruits, my eldest is 9 and she is great at cutting most things. We use an old steak knife for the kids to cut, as it is sharp enough to cut but not too sharp that it scares them! Here is a more in-depth guide that is very helpful: https://www.superhealthykids.com/parenting/child-use-knife/ There are some great kids safe knives on the market - this one from @lakelanduk looks great and comes with some good recommendations: https://www.lakeland.co.uk/18950/Kiddi-Kutter-Childs-Safety-Knife Again you may notice in this recipe we use nuts, seed, flaxseed, maca and baobab - not necessarily something you would find in food for kids! Each of these ingredients are high in Omega 3 - Essential Fatty Acids - Amongst many other benefits for adults and kids, they can help promote better sleep, they fight inflammation(and therefore help improve asthma) and in kids they can help improve the symptoms of ADHD - like hyperactivity, impulsiveness and a problem focusing. This recipe below has 2.4g of Omega 3’s - the equivalent of a can of high-grade tuna - so each serving has 0.2g of Omega 3: The ideal dose for kids aged 4 - 8 yrs old is 0.9g so it's a great way Calm House Winter Bark Frozen Snack Recipe: ❄️1 pot of Greek Yoghurt ❄️Mixed Nuts- 1 handful ❄️Mixed Seeds - ½ a cup full ❄️Ground Flaxseed - a level teaspoon ❄️Ground Maca Powder - a level teaspoon ❄️Ground Baobab Powder - a level teaspoon ❄️Honey - 2 large tablespoons ❄️Jam - 1 small tablespoon ❄️Blackberries ❄️Banana ❄️Desiccated Coconut - a level tblspn ❄️Selection of sprinkles or hundreds and thousands Method: Mix together a tablespoon of honey, the nutritional powders (flaxseed, maca and Baoba) Spread yoghurt in a baking tray. Instagram LogoDoes your little one struggle to wind down in the evening for bedtime? Most kids between the ages of 5 and 12 years old generally need between 10 to 11 hours of sleep. Some kids might need more and some need less. It really depends on the kid - but you know as a parent when your little one is tired, if they become grumpy, whiney or ratty. Professor Yvonne Kelly, from University College London’s department of UCL Epidemiology & Public Health published a recent study on varying bedtimes and a possible link with behaviour in the Journal of Pediatrics. The study found a clear clinical and statistically significant link between bedtimes and behavior. Irregular bedtimes affected children’s behavior by disrupting circadian rhythms (body clock), leading to sleep deprivation that affects the developing brain.  As children progressed through early childhood without a regular bedtime, their behavioral scores – which included hyperactivity, conduct problems, problems with peers and emotional difficulties – worsened.  However, children who switched to a more regular bedtime had clear improvements in their behavior. Professor Kelly stated that “What we’ve shown is that these effects build up incrementally over childhood, so that children who always had irregular bedtimes were worse off than those children who did have a regular bedtime at one or two of the ages when they were surveyed.”  “But our findings suggest the effects are reversible,” she continued “For example, children who change from not having to having regular bedtimes show improvements in their behavior.” So let's get our kids sleeping to make their lives and your lives happier...Here are a few tips to help you get them ready to give up the day and embrace the snooze... Heathline.com has a great piece: “Tips to get your Kids to Sleep” - it has been medically reviewed by Carissa Stephens, R.N., CCRN, CPN written by Dana Robinson. Instagram LogoHi I’m Lindsay You will see and hear me taking the Yoga and Relaxation, and Cooking videos for Calm House. I met Llio nearly a year ago now and we have always got on well - during lock down she offered to teach my two primary school age kids some art via Zoom to give me a break from homeschooling - I jumped at the chance! Half an hour to myself and the kids entertained - amazing! A day later THEY LOVED IT! Llio is a natural with children, fun and understanding, and while I have been toying with taking my Kids yoga and mindfulness work experience further everything seemed to fall into place and that’s how Calm House was born! Llio and myself are passionate and confident that mindfulness practices through Yoga, Art and Cooking will benefit your child and support them as they build their own healthy habits and routines ready to grow into teenagers and beyond. I come from a pretty full on sporting background having trained myself and others my whole life. I spent most of my youth training to jump as high as I could possibly manage and when I retired injured from GB athletics I began helping people lead a healthier life. Working with adults whose bad habits I was asked to help turn around taught me that most bad backs, knee pains, overeating while stressed or largely inactive lifestyles began much earlier than the story we tell ourselves. For example adults who were sporty kids often moved poorly because the focus had been entirely on sporting performance and not on how well they moved, others spoke about not having had a great relationship with exercise and sport often dropping out as soon as PE became optional in school. For all children, no matter what age, no matter whether they are ‘sporty kids’ or not - yoga can teach enjoyment of movement challenges, learning to explore movement and finding what they are good at and maybe surprising themselves with what they are not so good at! I am excited to start on this journey with Llio and Calm House and I hope you have a go at some of our mini videos coming soon!
