1-2-3: On Deadlines
(Reading time: 1 min 34 seconds)
1 Idea
- Our brain has two modes, normal and turbo. Normal is normal and does the job. The Turbo brain is more creative, effective, and efficient, but only for a short while.
2 Questions
- What if there was a button you could push and get the turbo brain going? Wouldn't you want to hit that button every once in a while? You might have guessed that I am talking about deadlines.
- I am pretty sure you've heard of SMART goals. But how about SMART deadlines? (go ahead, give it a try)
3 Actions
- Deadlines have almost a magical effect on our productivity. You have noticed that it will take seven days if you give a task, like writing a blog post, seven days. If you give it three days, then it will take three days. Magic! Right? It's called Parkinson's Law which states: The work expands itself to fill the time given to it. Here is a short video (4:15) that explains it nicely. Did you know both Musk and Edison frequently used their turbo brain?
- There is no one approach to achieve goals and create results. There are two major types. I call them Marathons and Sprints. Learning and mastery of any skill need consistent practice over time. That would be a marathon. And there are the ones best created during short bursts of focused activity and full engagement, i.e., sprints (4-6 weeks). Take a quick look at your projects and goals for the quarter or the year. Divide them into Sprints and Marathons. Then Plan accordingly. Hint: deadlines apply only to sprints. Let me know if you need help with that.
- There is a way to increase the power of deadlines. I am talking about accountability. Finding an accountability buddy (or group) who wants good things for you is priceless. It is using the power of peer pressure positively. Who can be a great accountability buddy for you? Who can you be a great accountability buddy for? Today is a good day for deadlines and accountability to join forces.
Speaking of accountability, a few years ago, I tested a few models for the idea of accountability as a service. The clients/testers enjoyed creating results and generated significant momentum. I want to know. Hit reply and tell me about them. Would you be interested if I start something around accountability again? If so, reply and let me know. If enough people respond, I'll restart the program.
