1-2-3: On Clarity in Communication

(Reading time: 1 min 1 second)

1 Idea

  • What if you were confident that every time you wrote something or made a phone call, you would be understood?

2 Questions

  • I am sure you want to make sure you cover all the relevant information in your communication. Are you also paying attention to the clarity of it?

  • Do you have a simple and easy-to-remember framework to organize your message?

3 Actions

  • Here is a simple and easy-to-remember framework. Before writing an email, be clear about Who, What, and How.

Who is this for?

What is the problem?

How are you going to solve it?

Example: I made this video a few years ago. Pay attention to the use of the Who, What, How framework. Funny coincidence: This video is also about communication, so a bonus win! (3:55 watch time)

  • To help people help you, next time you have a question: FIRST, ask the question, THEN give the background.

  • Divide and conquer. Bring up issues or questions ONE AT A TIME. In conversations, focus on one point until it is time to move on to the next, but say something to close it first. Say things like "ok, that takes care of that," or "ok, next." If the communication is in writing, send a separate short email about each one. Avoid sending long emails with many topics or questions. Think of it as giving the gift of full engagement every time you create space between issues.
