Yesterday, I shared the parable of two men:

One carried buckets.

One built a pipeline.

And the takeaway was clear:

If you want long-term freedom,

you need to build systems.

But there’s something that version of the story doesn’t say —

something we often forget.

The guy who built the pipeline?

He still carried buckets.

He didn’t skip the manual labor.

He didn’t roll into the village with blueprints and passive income dreams.

He worked.

He sweated.

He earned just enough to stay afloat while laying pipe.

Because without that?

He wouldn’t have survived long enough to finish.

And the other guy — the full-time bucket hauler?

He kept the village alive.

His work may not scale, but it still mattered.

It was steady. Reliable.

It filled the gap now while others focused on the future.

The truth is:

We need both.

We always have.

In business, there’s a temptation to shame the grind.

To romanticize “scaling” and “systems” and “automate everything.”

But systems don’t start themselves.

They’re built in the cracks —

between client calls, product tweaks, late-night ideas.

Buckets aren’t failure.

They’re fuel.

You might be in a season where you’re hauling.

Or one where you’re building.

Or — more likely — both.

That’s not a flaw.

That’s the process.

Keep hauling.

Keep building.

And don’t let anyone convince you one matters more than the other.
