Welcome to the Stress Less and Get More Done Newsletter !
One of the biggest obstacles to your success and well being is technology, seriously. Most of the apps we use are designed to be addictive, let's talk about some ways to fight back today.
This Weeks Topic:
How Tech is Making us Miserable
Here's how our apps mimic a slot machine to get you to spend more time on your devices.
They both have the same goal, to keep your attention as long as possible so they can make more money.
When you pull a slot machine, you don't know what's going to happen, you could lose money, or win a bunch of money.
This randomization of rewards is one of the most compelling forces to our reward system. The process of when a behavior is rewarded and your brain releases dopamine and you feel pleasure.
Now apply it to your devices, each time you open a social app or your email you anticipate a reward, which can turn to cravings over time.
If you don't get the reward you want, you can end up in a bad mood or start checking more often to get the reward.
Each time you pull up your phone, it's the same process as pulling a slot machine.
The red notifications, the new email icons and sounds all mimic the same patterns as a sot machine to make you feel like you've just won so you'll keep coming back.
If you find yourself refreshing your apps all the time, this is probably why. Try setting times when you check your apps or email so this process doesn't take over your day.
