The Last Lap
40 years ago there was another F1 race in Texas but it is not remembered as fondly as the races taking place in Austin. The Dallas Grand Prix was a combination of high heat, business in-fighting and a deteriorating track. In "The day F1 melted: Why the ill-fated Dallas Grand Prix left a searing impression", The Athletic's Patrick Iversen brings all the drama that occurred both on and off the track back to life.
"In an era of 24 races a year, when new cities have crowded onto the calendar, the 1984 Dallas GP, run 40 years ago this year, serves as a reminder that running even one weekend for the pinnacle of motorsport is no mean feat. It was a race that didn’t make it, falling somewhere between an ill-fated venture and a predictable disaster, depending on whom you ask."
