Crisis: is your tech ready?

Oct 12, 2023 2:26 pm

Over the last few years, we’ve experienced a lot of “unprecedented” situations. A global pandemic, locally to me a "derecho" windstorm, a war in Europe, and now the quickly developing Israel-Hamas war. Undoubtedly, the world is uncertain.

As a business technologist, events like these get me thinking about the business & tech implications of a crisis:

  • How is your business (and/or personal) technology preparing you to overcome or mitigate whatever situations that could affect you?
  • Is your business ready for downtime, disruption, or loss of assets due to weather, wars, unrest, cyber-attacks, or loss of a staff member (i.e. they leave for a new job or worse), etc.?
  • Even if you have a tech contingency plan, how do/will you update your plan over time to avoid losing sight of key changes required?

While we can't go around fearful of living, worrying about the world, or dreading the next "what-if", I encourage you to take a few minutes this week and consider your technology contingencies. If you already have them, dust them off and refresh them. Or put a date on the calendar to focus more energy on planning a few "tech what-ifs" and how you'd deal with them.

This tech contingency planning is time well spent to have peace of mind in an ever-shifting world. That piece of mind will then allow you to go off and build stuff in your genre to make the world better... so prayerfully, you'll never need any of those plans.

Yours in tech,

—Joshua
