Navigating changes in marriage successfully

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)
A few days ago I was talking to a husband who was celebrating his 13th wedding anniversary.
I asked him what he would tell newlyweds who needed marriage advice.
Without missing a beat, he said that he would tell the newlyweds to expect change in themselves and their marriage.
Good advice, but I wanted more.
I asked him how he has been able to change over the years.
His answer caught me off guard: humility.
I didn't expect that response. But, it makes sense, especially in light of today's verse.
When we're humble, we're open and teachable.
When we're open and teachable, we're able to receive wisdom.
When we receive wisdom, God shows us to make necessary changes that benefit our marriage.
On the contrary, when we're not humble, i.e., prideful, we miss the cues to change in our marriage because we're thinking about ourselves, how our mate should change for us, and what we need.
As you may know, the result is never good.
To make your marriage work, be humble.
