My husband and I went camping last weekend. It was nice to get away from the house and the computers. We saw deer, chipmunks, Abert squirrels (which are dark gray with white tails) and a baby horned toad. We saw more animals than people! I hope youā€™re finding a way to enjoy nature (if the air permits being outside where you are - if not, maybe hug a houseplant), or do whatever it is that brings you peace.

Above is a view from one hike. Our usual New Mexico blue skies were hazy with smoke from fires to the west, but itā€™s nice to look down over the Very Large Array ā€“ radio telescopes that were featured in the movie Contact but actually do scientific research not related to aliens.

And hereā€™s the sunset we watched one night. Again, smoke from the western fires is responsible for those colors. It made for a pretty sunset, but weā€™d much rather have rain clouds!

Animal rescue workers in the news: Animal control officers get a bad rap in movies where they're trying to capture the animal heroes. In reality, they help reunite lost pets with owners, get strays medical help so they can be placed up for adoption or trapped/neutered/released, as appropriate, and even help pet owners be more responsible. Here's a profile of one, Kevin McDonough in Troy, NY. "One of the most important services Kevin provides is the distribution of pet food to pet owners in need."

Print to e-book conversion mistake of the day (from a friend): I was reading a Revolutionary War text a few years ago, and it took me far too long to realize that every instance of the word "clone" should really have been "done."

What is happening here?!?

That's Bear Bear. I accused my husband of not assembling him properly that morning, but for a ferret, this is a comfy nap.

Things you should be watching: Check out this wildlife cam video: ā€œThe Madrean Sky Islands are one of the most biologically rich areas on earth. Located less than 100 miles south of the border between the US and Mexico, this mountain range is teeming with life ā€“ yet it is largely unstudied. In order to accurately conserve the Sky Islands, we must know what is thereā€¦ Our scientists added a special ingredient to get wildlife to stop thereā€¦mountain lion urine! The pheromones in the urine attract the attention of everyone passing by, including other mountain lions.ā€

Should my husband and I get one for our backyard wildlife cam? Or does that sound like a really bad idea? šŸ˜²

If youā€™re interested in writing for children, my book on the subject will be $0.99 for the Kindle Wednesday, September 23-28. Iā€™m not scheduled to send this newsletter during that time, so you can make a note on your calendar to go to this link, or join my newsletter for Writing Help from a Pro, which goes out very rarely ā€“ once or twice a year with special offers. I also have a blog with writing advice.

You Can Write for Children: How to Write Great Stories, Articles, and Books for Kids and Teenagers (written as Chris Eboch) is also available in paperback, or in Large Print paperback: ā€œIf you want to write for children or the childrenā€™s market, this is the book for you. From picture books to MG to YA, as well as childrenā€™s magazines, Chris shares tips from her years (and multiple published novels) of experience. You will learn about POV, plotting, structure, genre, tone, sub plots, setting, theme, editing, and more. I have two childrenā€™s picture books on my computer, and, after reading this book, I know what I need to do to make them better.ā€
