My 2024 EOY wrap up
THIS YEAR IN REVIEW
I looked back over what I’ve accomplished, writing-wise, and it doesn’t look that bad. I didn’t have any brand new novels come out, but I did pretty well with short stories, and even published one article.
SHORT STORIES: January: “One Woman’s Trash” came out in SEEDS, the gardening blog by Michael Bracken. Since January is slow for gardens, he publishes short fiction then. It’s rather short and sweet (no murders this time—I held myself back) if you want to read it.

April: On April Fool’s Day, “Monday in the Park” came out in the eclipse story anthology I edited, DARK OF THE DAY, published by Down and Out Books.
August: On the 9th, the Smoking Guns anthology that I edited was published by Wildside Press. I contributed two stories: “Fences, Neighbors, and a Gun” plus “Johnny and Hyde”. Yes it’s a play on Bonnie and Clyde. This one was EXCITING because, after Billy Kilgore reviewed it at https://chapter16.org/sinister-stories/, that review got a half-page spread in the Knoxville Sentinel! It got a LOT of notice there. There’s nothing like being in a newspaper. My family got a kick out of Mr. Kilgore saying this: One of my favorites, “Fences, Neighbors, and a Gun” by Kaye George, who also edited the anthology, intrigued me with its domestic depravity.
September: 9/13: “The Lady and the Diner” in Killer Nashville Magazine. This is a precursor, of sorts, to a new cozy series coming out later. https://www.killernashville.com/short-stories/the-lady-and-the-diner
9/17: “In a Pickle” appeared in the Games People Play anthology. A game about pickleball going wrong.
October: 10/4 The Pickleball story was podcast here: https://tgwolff.com/podcast/
Page down to E19 to hear it, if you have time. It’s an hour long, but fun. Tina reads the story up to the point where she stops and her son tries to guess the killer. I stumped him!

These are called Drabbles, stories of exactly 100 words, no more, no less. They’re a challenge and I love to write them.
In December, I batted 500. I had one story rejected and another accepted, the one above. I batted less than that for the year, but I’m only going to count December.

***My son was asked to record a radio show on KUTX! It aired 12/7 on the “My KUTX” program at https://kutx.org/episodes/my-kutx-bret-egner/. He presented an awesome playlist with one of his own tunes at the end.
ON THE MEND
***After my toe surgery, my pin worked its way out prematurely and it had to be pulled out. By the doctor, not by me! This means I quit using The Boot sooner than I was supposed to. I’m trying to be careful that this doesn’t mess everything up. We’ll see. But I’m in regular shoes, at least, limited to those with a pretty solid sole.
TIS THE SEASON
***While the ideal of Merry and Bright, Jolly Ho Ho Ho, is apparent everywhere, some of us suffer during this season. Our family has suffered a loss, and I’m finding out about the losses of friends in their once-a-year cards and letters. I’m holding all of my friends and family who have a tough time with December in my heart, and hoping we all get through it without too much trauma. With January looming, we’ll all be suffering soon!
