Are you having a good day?

A better way to consider this.

Hi , Hope its sunny for you.

Quick question: Is today a bad day? Or is it just less than average?

My dad once heard a politician on the radio say:

"50% of children in school are performing below average. We must do something to fix it."

Dad's a smart man and recognised the stupidity of the statement straight away.

I'm sure you do too:

If you line up all your days, from your worst to your best, there are inevitably going to be plenty (half) that fall below your average.

It might even be that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday all sit below the curve this week.

That’s just how averages work.

Yet we probably wake up hoping today will be better than yesterday.

As, of course, we should.

But try to remember: this simply cannot be the case every day.

We must consider luck, chance, karma, universal cosmic force that makes the weighing scales of life remain balanced.

ie. "Today is a bit terrible, but I had such a great weekend, it all evens out."

And, even if you do remember this, don't feel like there's pressure for you to enjoy it anyway.

After all, you're having a below average day...

But luck isn't the only force at play.

You can fight back.

Intentional living doesn't mean twiddling your thumbs when a bad day crops up. It's based around a key concept:

Averages move.

We want our weekly, monthly, yearly average to climb up over time. To compound.

Why not?

-We know more about what we like,

-We foster deeper relationships,

-We might have more disposable income,

etc.

So our average 'happiness-per-day' might continue to build year on year like this:

If you took yourself from a year ago, and plonked yourself in this week's average day, they might all be winners.

Even if 49.9% of the time, you'll still feel pretty meh.

Not to mention the other risk: If you're not careful, your life can track downwards 👉

So, whilst this is all a nice idea so far, let's talk about

The real takeaway.

Our goal in life ought to be that of intention.

Being deliberate with the habits, the days, the years, the life that we build.

It's therefore important that we create routine, order and priorities so that - even on the 'bad day' - we still have these to fall back on.

This ensures we're in the best position for when our head gets off the pillow tomorrow.

Healthy routines, gym class, screen time are easy to stick to on the good days.

The real test comes on the bad.

The days when you’re tired, stressed, busy, unmotivated or simply not feeling yourself.

These are the days when your positive habits matter most.

So don’t be fooled into assuming that next year will automatically be better than this one.

Or that you'll even continue to build up your averages year on year by default.

That depends on you. It always has.

One of the things we do at humans BEING is help people design their lives.

A great starting place is introducing seemingly small routines and protocols that become automatic and compound over time.

So, when you’re reading this, take a moment to check in with yourself.

  1. What sort of day is today going to be?

  1. What’s one thing that is becoming non-negotiable for you that, regardless of how today feels or goes, that you should commit to?

  1. Would I benefit from some help?

I've got a few spots open for those feeling 'stuck in a rut' with their energy and mood currently and looking to radically shape things up before the New Year.

If that's you or someone you know - let's have a conversation about working together on a 6-week programme so you can invest in yourself, now.

And remember: you don’t need to have a great day to do something great for yourself.

Cheers

Live by design, not default.
