Dean Galtua had been sent to scout for new resources on an interstellar exploration vessel. He was a young man, just out of training, with the whole universe ahead of him. Dean landed on a sandy desert planet and began exploring. He pulled out his binoculars and tried scanning the horizon, but all he could see were rolling dunes of white sand punctuated by occasional rocks. There was no sign of life anywhere—no animals or plants, not even any trees or shrubs. Just a panoramic view of vast fields of sand dunes. He was just about to put the binoculars down when he saw movement in the distance—a dark shape rising out of the sand. Dean took up his binoculars again and looked closer at what he thought might be a mound of sand dunes. As he zoomed in on it, he realized that it wasn’t a pile of sand at all: It was an enormous creature covered in thick scales with a mouth full of sharp teeth burrowing through the sand! Its head burst above the surface of the sand before dipping down again in a cloud of dust. Silence. Dean wondered if he was just seeing things due to the difference in oxygen levels. Then it burst through again as if propelled by some powerful force.
