When animals think you’re food... Horses are monogastric grazers. Seems less valuable than ruminants like cows, goats, and sheep, but we rotate them here, too. I’m sure they play a role in soil health: hooves, poop, etc. Something I’d like to learn more about.
? Dog on a farm but not a farm dog. Some dogs are companions, some are coworkers. Walter wasn’t quite meant for the field, so here he sits watching his mama @ma.riion work.
Be salt. This is a good one from @joelgamoran ??
Free choice supplement buffet! Ideally, grazing animals could get all their nutrition from the grasses and foliage they eat. But since most of our soils are depleted from decades of extractive agricultural practices, they need to supplement. The sheep know what minerals they are lacking and need, hence the free choice setup of isolated minerals. I suspect we know what we need, too, in terms of food, if we listen.
Happy cows. A double rainbow. A pot of gold? Somewhere out there. Happy Saturday! Link in bio
Today I learned: Great Pyrenees tend to be more gentle with the sheep and with people. Anatolian shepherds are a little more aggressive towards visitors. These guys are a cross between the two and are friendly little giants.
Before going all in on police reform or the currently popular #8cantwait campaign some celebrities are bandwagon-ing, here’s a good reminder that reform doesn’t work. It has never worked. Before attacking #defundthepolice this is a good primer as to what it actually means. To my Asian brothers and sisters, PLEASE LISTEN! If you are embarrassed or ashamed at having been leveraged, don’t be. We all bought into this myth at one point. Instead, you should be ANGRY. And turn that anger into action. Link in bio. “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. ? Wrote an essay on the state of our food supply chain and what we can do now to build a better one tomorrow. It's simple: spend your food dollars with resilient food systems. Especially now, it has an outsized impact. Farms I've personally visited are listed, plus more to come. Link in bio:
Talking to our small ruminants manager about going from 200 to 2,000 sheep! Working on a cool video project to share the amazing things we’re doing here. Can’t wait to share some of the footage.
