Do you know the difference between sport superstitions and routines? Superstitions include magical thinking. Believing that some random act (like wearing your lucky socks) contributes to your success. Your superstition might actually help if it frees your mind to focus on the task at hand. But you are at risk of increased anxiety and distraction if that irrelevant action doesn’t occur or you lose those socks! Superstitions give us a false sense of control to relieve our performance anxiety. A much better approach is to have sport routines for critical moments in your performance. Pre-game, between points, after a mistake, and post-game review. A routine will only include the steps that directly and specifically prepare you physically, mentally, and emotionally to perform your best. All the elements of a routine are under your control. And when done consistently, you consistently perform better. Common elements of a routine include breathing for relaxation, self-talk mantras to increase intensity, imagery to rehearse your next step, or choosing a spot to focus you eyes and attention on. LIKE if you practice any superstitions. COMMENT and tell me your funniest superstition! (Personally, I like to match my home and away jerseys with my favorite pro teams when watching them play). Love this game in all weather ... but there is something special about playing in the snow ... Nothing makes me feel more alive than playing this game. ... I am so happy right now ?
In this episode of The Sports Project (Listen with link in bio), Steve and Dr. Eddie discuss … How fans and athletes are alike in their expectations of the future: - Be careful not to get too attached to either the negative or the positive for best performances - How the pain of losing has several positive effects Perfectionism: - How intolerance of mistakes contribute to the development of perfectionism - Use mistakes as an opportunity to grow - Join Success Stories Membership as we tackle challenges like these (www.dreddieoconnor.com/membership) Advice to players unsure if they will have a season: - Keep your attention on what you control (training, recovery, mindset, nutrition and sleep) - Increase motivation to train by focusing on your identity (this is what athletes do) rather than the deadlines - Beat you opponent by being prepared – this is an opportunity to get ahead - How to use the pandemic to develop your strength in adversity by using the “go ahead and look back” exercise LISTEN HERE:
Obstacle: You notice every mistake you make. You proudly say, “I am my harshest critic.” You think it drives you - and it does - but at what cost? You’re never satisfied. You’re losing joy. And your performance is suffering. How to Overcome: Catch your self doing something right! Science has shown that we grow the best with a 5:1 ratio of positive reinforcement to constructive criticism ratio. So don’t worry about decreasing that negative self-talk. Start by catching yourself doing something right, acknowledge it specifically, and let that accomplishment settle in. The full 10 minute video contains more specific exercises to improve your confidence and consistency and is available in Success Stories Membership here: www.dreddieoconnor.com/membership - Join to catch every “Monthly Mindset” deep dive lesson like this. Get my favorite FREE video that will show you how to let go of those negative thoughts and allow the compliments in here at www.DrEddieOConnor.com/when-positive-thinking-doesnt-work *** LIKE or COMMENT “Yes” if you could be closer to 5:1 than you are right now!
Obstacle: Perfectionism. You hate mistakes. So you do everything you can to avoid them. Problem is, the more you try to avoid making mistakes, the more they happen. This ruins your mood and motivation, which further hurts performance. Now you are in a downward spiral. How to Overcome: Ignore the advice that “it’s OK if you make a mistake.” We know that isn’t true! If they were people wouldn’t get so mad when we make them. We wouldn’t have consequences for them. Mistakes can be the reason you lose, they disappoint your teammates, parents and coaches, and mistakes are embarrassing. AND … they are necessary for growth. You simply cannot learn without failing. You have to experience how NOT to do it before you figure out how to do it. You don’t have to like it. But you do have to accept mistakes are part of the process of growth. In Success Stories Membership, high-performers learn how to respond to mistakes in a way that improves their performance, not hurt it. Go to www.dreddieoconnor.com/membership And get my FREE video that will show you how to get over mistakes more quickly, bringing your attention back to what’s important now at www.DrEddieOConnor.com/when-positive-thinking-doesnt-work *** Tell me in the COMMENTS about a mistake that taught you a valuable lesson.
Mood: Sad ... and grateful. I love my team, coaches and players. Such a fun season. Thank you. I’m forever on this ride with you. ... Saving this table for next season
