😆Your worst enemy - does this happen to you?

Jun 04, 2021 5:36 pm

Well , it happened again.

This time it started before I was 6 steps out of bed.  As I closed the bathroom door, a towel fell to the floor and cleverly aligned itself to allow closing, but not latching.  Awesome.

Stopping to re-open the door and hang the towel on it’s loose hook isn’t a major inconvenience, but it is annoying.  And with one battle under my belt, I turn on the shower and wait for the water to heat up.

Stepping in and beginning the top-down approach, I rinse my hair first.  Grabbing the sliver of soap, it slides off my hand and melts into the tile below.  Shit.

Careful not to slip, I get out and grab a new bar while dripping all over the floor (I’ve yet to figure out if it’s better to drip on the floor and clean it up later, or if stepping on the towel and doing the foot-slide-shuffle around the bathroom is more efficient).

After navigating the wet floor and getting dressed, I made it into the kitchen.  And that’s where I snapped.

The “clean” plate I grabbed had a gob of grease on the back that was now all over my (freshly showered) hand.  FUCK.

What the hell is going on?!  It’s been one thing after another.  Shit’s been fucked up every step of the way.

Someone has got to get it together.  But after exhausting all reasonable and unreasonable options of other people to blame, I found a hard truth.

By half-assing jobs around the house, I had been unknowingly setting up little boobie traps for myself.

The towels fell because I was actively procrastinating on fixing the loose rack.  The soap was out because I didn’t replace the bar when I knew it was too small for another use.  The back of the plate was greasy because I didn’t thoroughly wash it!

By cutting corners, I was setting up Future Danny for a morning full of frustrations.

Now, when I notice myself walking away from an unfinished project, I pause.  If it will take less than 2 minutes, I do it NOW.  More than 2 minutes?  Schedule it.

Your homework this week:  Where in your life are you cutting corners and setting up boobie traps for Future You?  Notice when it’s happening and set yourself up for success.

There are plenty of people who don’t give a shit about you, so there’s no need to be one of them yourself.

Be great,

Danny Lehr
