#427 – How else are you killing your prosperity?

When a puppy's trapped, she's afraid. If someone gets closer to help her leg out of the trap, she'll growl and show her teeth. She thinks she's protecting herself, but she's only prolonging her struggle.

Underearners do the same thing. When trapped in our circumstance, consistently making less money than we're capable of, we arrogantly insist on going it alone, refusing the help we're offered.

In 2000, I participated in the first conference a linguistic group at the University of Padova organized. The proceedings would be published by the prestigious academic house Routledge and the conference director asked me for my paper. I said yes and, before submitting it, I showed it to a professor working in the same field, to get her feedback.

When the feedback was pages full of suggestions, minor edits, and major revisions, several Money Ghosts came to the rescue: first, I got a migraine (Physical Ailments). Then, I felt angry (Need to Prove), alone (Isolation), ashamed (Misplaced Shame).

Overwhelmed, I shoved the paper and the feedback into a drawer, where it stayed (Not Following Up).

The Italian editor called me several times: please, send the paper. "I can't, I'm depressed," I responded.

I was afraid, but I didn't recognize the fear because the Ghosts in my head were so convincing.

When will you stop rejecting help to open yourself to prosperity?

Love,

Carolina
