👋🏽 ¡Hey there, !
¡Buenas tardes! What a week full of news clips from so many US and MX influencers: Jorge Ramos is leaving Univision, and in the US the debate was...interesting, and Mexans revolted against the government to Keep Mexico Great (Again?). Today is your lucky day because I have a Hispanic-Heritage-Month treat for you below in today's
P.O.C.H.O. Stuff Email
Algo bien for a fun Friday.
Edition: September Friday the 13, 2024
Picture 📸 • Optimism💖 • Cool Find 🕵🏽♂️ • Homework 📝 • Other Stuff 📢
PICTURE: 📸
I took a picture of some exquisite esquite.
Accidentally skipped lunch yesterday and luckily 🍀 the city has vendors everywhere. I came across this ginormous pot of esquite and promptly ordered a cup of corn to-go, con todo.
OPTIMISM: 💖
A message from an influential revolutionary:
“Sin importar el tamaño de la ciudad o pueblo en donde nacen los hombres o las mujeres, ellos son finalmente del tamaño de su obra, del tamaño de su voluntad de engrandecer y enriquecer a sus hermanos”.
COOL FIND: 🕵🏽♂️
Targé just released this year's Hispanic Heritage Collections which they're touting online as "Latino Heritage Month" (I'll accept it, Target.) with the tagline of "Contigo this month & every day" (very pocho of you, Target). ¡Me Gusta!
Chek out the HHM website, available en español tambien. I may have already ordered appeal featuring JuanGa, Celia Cruz, and even Walter Mercado.
HOMEWORK: 📝
Learn about an anthem: It's Mexican Independence Day in just a few days! Look up the words to the Mexican National Anthem (or one that resonates with you), if you don't know the words read through them and try to get a better understanding of their meaning. 🔍🌿
OTHER STUFF: 📢
Today's other stuff is a quick segway into a subscriber favorite: BTW. I am thrilled to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off this weekend Sept 15, and officially runs for thirty days, and encapsulates most independence days from Central and South America. I once again turn to our POCHO Community for help with a BONUS TIP of the WEEK:
I reached out to some of my favorite Latino influencers, leaders, and creators to share why this month holds significance for them. Here’s what they had to say:
🎉 A Fiesta with Meaning
Chris Cabezas, journalist and TikTok influencer, highlights the celebration aspect: “Hispanic Heritage Month to me is time in the year where we can really focus on celebrating all the contributions coming from the Hispanic community. We often forget, ignore, or simply don’t hear about the importance of Hispanics in the world in the present and past. It’s a perfect time to have a fiesta with a powerful and positive meaning. Everyone’s invited!” Follow Chris on IG.
✊🏽 Our Existence is Resistance
Jenny & Kevin, Latine YouTubers from Chicago living in Mexico, bring a sharp reminder of the social dynamics: “We live in a society that likes our food more than our presence, wants our cheap labor but blames us for ‘stealing’ jobs. Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder to the USA that we matter, that our culture is beautiful and more than just an opportunity for profit and appropriation. In this society, existence is resistance, and we are HERE FOR IT ✊🏽🇲🇽🇺🇸🥳.” Subscribe to Eat Baila Travel on YouTube.
🌍 Unity in Diversity
My folklorico friend Diana Costanzo, a Latina leader and Bilingual Senior Human Resources Manager at Grand Hyatt, shares a message of unity: “HHM is important to me because it’s an opportunity to remind each other that our diversity is what makes us unique. It’s a time where we can celebrate our accomplishments and reinforce the commitment to continue to support one another.”
🌱 Key Takeaways
This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s embrace the vibrant diversity and rich contributions of the Hispanic community. From celebrating our history and culture to standing up against marginalization, this is a time for unity, pride, and resistance.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of our history, our contributions, and our strength. It’s about honoring our presence and continuing to lift each other up.”
Stay tuned for more insights in our next BTW. Until then, let’s celebrate, uplift, and embrace the spirit of our heritage!
📌 TLDR; POCHO HHM Takeaway
Honor Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the contributions of the Hispanic community, challenging stereotypes, and supporting one another.
