Swimming Against the Tide

With the heat of the summer and Austin's beautiful waterways, swimming is on all of our minds and hopefully on your calendar too.

The Talmud lists things you must teach your child. After the obvious responsibilities like teaching them Torah, and training them in a craft or trade, the Talmud says that you must teach your child to swim.

The simple reason for this is that traveling in the olden days involved crossing rivers and seas and a capsized boat could kill you if you didn't know how to swim.

But there is a deeper message here: life is like a stormy sea. The waves of stress and pressure threaten to capsize our little craft and drown us under a mountain of worry and distraction.

A thriving Jew swims, and not simply paddling to stay afloat, but against the current, not intimidated by others.

Life and people pressure us. Anyone who starts keeping a new mitzvah that he or she never previously kept knows how hard it can be to swim against the current.

The best skill a parent could teach their child, and that we can do for ourselves is how to swim—against the tide.
