Fermented foods or Probiotics? What’s better for your gut?

Apr 10, 2025 5:06 am

Have you ever stood in front of the fridge wondering if that store-bought yogurt is doing anything at all for your digestion?

Or maybe you have been popping probiotic capsules and still feel bloated, sluggish, or confused about what your gut really needs?

Hi

Let me tell you…

You’re not alone. Every week, I get messages asking: “Deepali, should I be eating fermented or take probiotics?”

Let’s clear the confusion right away:

Both fermented foods and probiotics can be powerful allies for your gut, but choosing the right one depends on your body’s current state and I’ll guide you based on my client types.

For my inflamed, low-energy warriors (think IBS, psoriasis, body pain):

Start with fermented foods.

They’re natural, come with fibers (prebiotics), and offer a diverse population of microbes. But here’s the key: go slow and steady. Your gut lining may be too inflamed to handle a probiotic pill dump.

Include:

  • Homemade curd (start with 2 tbsp/day)
  • Fermented homemade kanji
  • Lightly fermented vegetables like carrots or radish with rock salt for Sauerkraut

Caution: If you feel bloated, gassy, or tired after them - pause. That’s your gut saying, “Not yet.”

For my tired-yet-stable go-getters (sluggish digestion, low focus, sugar cravings):

You can level up with targeted probiotics.

Especially strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium - they help rebalance the gut-brain axis and reduce systemic inflammation.

Include:

  • Should be a good quality / brand probiotic supplement
  • A prebiotic base like a bowl of salad to feed those bugs

The Deepali Touch Tip:

Whichever path you choose - always pair it with an anti-inflammatory foundation. Without this, even the best probiotics can’t thrive.

So, here’s what you can do today:

Open your fridge. Do you have something alive in there? Not expired yogurt, but truly fermented food. If not, make your own probiotic pickle today with mustard seeds, turmeric, and lemon or prepare kanji or simply start with simple rice kanji.

Simply drop a text on WhatsApp with “Ferment me up” and I’ll send you a 3-day Gut Reset using fermented foods. Or book a free 10-min clarity call to know whether your gut is ready for probiotics.

Let’s stop playing guesswork with health.

Because my dear you deserve clarity, not confusion.
