Amaka is Disappointed!

For the past 5 years, Amaka has been chasing online money like a Lagosian trying to catch a danfo in heavy rain.

In 2019, she thought she had found the gold mine with drop shipping. She wanted to make millions by selling products that she didn't have to produce or handle by herself. 🤑

She joined a WhatsApp group where a vendor sent her and other aspiring drop shippers pictures of bags and shoes to post for sale.

She only managed to sell 2 bags and 1 shoe in a whole year! She made a whopping 35k profit from that, which was the exact amount she used to buy data to repost those pictures for 3 months. Talk about "buying data to catch more data"! 😭

In 2020, she took a different approach. She left drop shipping behind, embracing blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.

Although she couldn't define the terms "blockchain" and "cryptocurrency", she was confident that she could make millions from them.

After signing up on an app and referring 500 people, she made seven million naira in 6 months! Sadly, when it was time to withdraw her earnings, the app stopped working.

She was heartbroken again… After promising her mom a car and using her school fees to buy an iPhone. 🥲

Undeterred, she entered 2021 determined to make money as a freelancer. With only her mobile phone and N200 data weekly, she was going to earn 350k every month. 🙄

She started following freelancers on Instagram and LinkedIn and watching motivational videos on YouTube. By the end of the year, she had zero clue on how to actually make money through freelancing.

(Read the next paragraph in Lasisi Elenu’s voice… shouting)

2022 rolled in and Amaka discovered affiliate marketing! A game changer!! She was going to finally make her millions once she:

  1. Paid some money to join an affiliate marketing community!
  2. Convinced other people to pay to join the community too!!! Easy money!!!!!!

(Read this one in Lai Wasabi’s voice)

Throughout the year she managed to convince 10 people to join the community. She made 100k. Finally! She made money, but wait… 100k ÷ 12 is eight thousand, three hundred and thirty naira, per month! That’s not a dream income?

She spent 300k on data that year! That's a loss!

Now in 2023, Amaka is seriously questioning if online money-making is her calling.

She's getting that feeling you get when there’s been a power outage for the past 3 days and you have a working gen but fuel is N500/litre. What’s it called? Discouragement? Amaka is disappointed.

Please advise Amaka on what to do next. Give her some advice in the comment section of this letter. If this is in your email, find the web version here and leave your comment below it.

Amaka sounds a lot like me😂😂😂. It's both funny and heartbreaking. I'll advice her to first identify what she really wants to do and stop chasing everything. After that she should actually do her market analysis and be sincere to herself if the business she's about to start is worthwhile. If it's not, she should go for something else but if it is, she should focus on it and put her energy and resources and build it. It definitely won't be rosy at first but once she has built value in that area, the money will follow.

Amaka should please try to raise 100k to invest in 'LEARNING' digital skills from a certified coach (not an Instagram wannabe with 3k followers and 5 testimonial that look fabricated). She should also take courses on digital skills from big international brands that issue certificates. This way, she can build her CV and her skillset and then apply for an entry job in the digital space and gradually work her way up with constant upgrade. I hope Amaka is patient sha because this will take a year or 2 to fully accomplish but the results will be rewarding!

I think Amaka needs to learn a skill. Could be video editing, web dev, oe & she should know the journey towards learning a skill starts with self-discovery. She has to reflect on her interests, strengths, and passions. What activities bring her joy and fulfillment? When she's figured out what she wants to do, she has to set clear goals, then embrace the learning process, create a consistent practice routine, and stay committed to what she does. Changing courses every year is only hurting her. Sometimes it takes 10 years to become an overnight success.

Amaka is so me for the past three years now. It hits home every time I think about all my bad life choices because of money. Nowadays I am learning how to do better than Amaka, I am taking life easy, doing one thing at a time and doing it well. To all the Amakas out there, I think you just need to breadthe and rediscover yourself.

Amaka! Amaka !! You think say you wise. I'll advise Amaka to pick one skillset and become a master at it instead of jumping from pillar to post in a bid to discover what works.. Just find one thing and gain mastery.. You go soon cash out.
