Get Your Game Face ON

Hey there!

It's friday!

Ok...that has absolutely nothing to do with this email.

A few years ago I was doing my work and minding my business at a thought leadership workshop I was invited to do for the executives of a small bank...

During one of the breaks a lady walked up to me and said:

The problem with all you motivational speakers is that all of you have sweet mouth. You can talk but no action.

Curious as to what she meant I asked: "What do you mean?!"

She said:

All the things you're asking us to do...can you prove without doubt that they will work for us like you say they will?

In response I said:

"First of all I don't know if they'll work for you or not. This reason is I don't know for sure that you will do exactly what I recommend that you do.

Second...contrary to what you might think...I actually don't need to prove anything to you.

But you need to prove it to yourself and know for sure once and for all.

The only way to do that is suspend disbelief and just do what I've recommended exactly the way I've suggested you do it"

She gave me a look that suggested she was trying to decide whether or not I was mad.

Apparently no trainer had spoken to her like that before.

I later found out she was one of their top producing executives and that she had a lot of clout in the bank.

Anyway...

The next morning I got an email from her telling me she had been impressed by my confidence.

And based on that...

She had decided to follow through with what I suggested.

The result?

Bigger better job offer from a competing bank...

And that was barely a month after my workshop by just implementing one of the simple strategies I shared:

Using Speaking as a marketing tool not just for products and services but for you as a brand...

Basically a three step process:

  1. Capture and document your wisdom in a way that is not only meaningful, relevant and engaging to your target market...but also transferable.
  2. Put together a talk based on the ideas you've captured...that effectively communicates your understanding of your markets problems and your unique solution.
  3. Deliberately book yourself out to speak where your market is.

Her first talk landed her bigger, better job.

My point?

Yes...

I'm pretty awesome thank you very much.

But I didn't get there by waiting for people to tell me that...

I had have the audacity to believe it.

I had to develop the courage to believe in my capacity to produce results for people...

Long before I even had proof that I could.

Courage is the electricity of the entrepreneurial world.

To get where you are now....

You’ve probably taken on all kinds of things even when you weren’t sure you had the knowledge or skill to pull them off.

But you committed to it and acted inspite of your fears...

And you created the result.

Seeing this...

You gained confidence which ultimately gave birth to even greater courage...

Which allowed you to do even more.

When you don't commit to things courageously...

Everything seems more difficult and your ability to accomplish anything is greatly diminished.

Because courage and commitment are the foundation of all our other abilities...

The number one responsibility of every entrepreneur is to protect his or her courage and ability to commit to doing epic things.

The way we do this is by growing our capabilities and giving ourselves credit for our progress.

People might accuse you of being vain...

But like I sometimes say..

It's not vain if it's true...

So how exactly do you start to develop the kind of courage I'm talking about?

First...

Keep a gratitude journal and catalogue the good things that have happened...your achievements and use that to evaluate your progress.

Don't make the classic mistake of assessing yourself by how far you still have to go...rather than how far you've come!

Second...

When you encounter a setback...

Take out time to review the experience and find new insights and improvements for the future.

Third...

Have clear capacity goals.

What are you doing to consistently cultivate your strengths, talents and passions?

We’re living in a time when many people’s confidence is at an all-time low.

If you're able to inspire confidence in others in spite of what's happening...

Clients and loyal followings will not be issues for you.

But to generate confidence for others...

You first have to know how to do it for yourself.

The key to that is courage and commitment...

Learning to generate your own courage allows you to be freed up from the negative emotional influence of unexpected and unpredictable external change.

It equips you to see the opportunity that almost always accompanies such change.

When others are paralyzed....

You can be clear and focused on your clients and on how to create value, even if the game has changed radically.

Let me know your thoughts.

Till Tomorrow..

Play a bigger game
