Growth is a sacrificial act— to pull it off you have to steal from other areas of your life. If you did not “trade” something here to grow something over there, it means you stole it and will have to give it back - CTM

Hey there

So...

Today marks 32 years on the dot since I got started in the expert space.

This morning 32 years ago, I put together my very first set of audio tapes titled: How to make an extra 25000 a week selling beef on a subscription basis

I'd come back in the evening with about N18,000 naira burning a hold in my pocket - more money than the principal of my secondary school made at the time.

Within 10 years I would go on to meet Janet my mentor and the rest as they say is history.

Over the past 30+ years I've had my own fair share of ups and downs - but all in all, I think I've not done too badly all things considered.

Here are 21 key lessons I've learned working as a coach and consultant to some pretty amazing individuals and organizations over the last 3 decades:

1. Solve Complex Problems: Your value as a coach or consultant lies in tackling the hard problems your clients can't solve alone. The more challenging the issue, the more valuable your expertise becomes.

2. Prioritize Client Transformation: Focus on delivering tangible, useful results. Your success is measured by your clients' transformations, not just the advice you give.

3. Curate Your Client List: Be selective about who you work with. The wrong clients can drain your energy and damage your reputation. It's okay to say no to projects that don't align with your expertise or values.

4. Manage Your Energy: In a service-based business, you are the product. Prioritize self-care and energy management to consistently deliver high-quality work to your clients.

5. Balance Optimism and Realism: Stay positive about your clients' potential while remaining grounded about the challenges they face. This balance builds trust and drives results.

6. Design Robust Frameworks: Develop solid, repeatable methodologies for your practice. Once established, you can swiftly apply and adapt these frameworks to each client's needs.

7. Guard Your Unique Approach: While you can outsource administrative tasks, never delegate your core expertise or unique methodology. That's your competitive edge.

8. Embrace Iteration: Your first framework may not be perfect. Learn from each client interaction and continually refine your approach.

9. Build a Sustainable Practice: Focus on creating a steady stream of clients and results rather than chasing one big win. Consistency builds a strong reputation over time.

10. Beware of Quick Fixes: If a solution seems too easy, it probably is. Real, lasting change for your clients usually requires substantial effort and commitment.

11. Think Long-Term: Consider how your advice will impact your clients not just immediately, but in the years to come. Build long-term relationships rather than quick wins.

12. Establish Clear Values: Define the principles that will guide how you work early. These guiding principles will help you make difficult decisions and attract aligned clients.

13. Commit Fully to Clients: When you take on a client, give them your all. Half-hearted commitment leads to mediocre results and damaged reputations.

14. Regularly Reassess Your Services: Periodically review your offerings. Are they still relevant? Are they still what you want to be known for? Be willing to evolve.

15. Distinguish Between Fatigue and Misalignment: Learn to recognize when you're just tired versus when a client or project no longer aligns with your goals. Act accordingly.

16. Learn from Setbacks: A challenging client or a project that didn't go as planned can be your greatest teacher. Use these experiences to improve your processes and offerings.

17. Prioritize Genuine Relationships: In coaching and consulting, your network is everything. Focus on building authentic connections rather than just chasing opportunities.

18. Maintain Your Passion: Your enthusiasm is contagious. Clients are drawn to and get better results from coaches and consultants who are genuinely excited about their work.

19. Embrace Calculated Risks: Whether it's trying a new coaching technique or expanding your services, growth often requires stepping out of your comfort zone. Make informed, but bold moves.

20. Protect Your Wellbeing: If a client or project consistently makes you feel drained or anxious, it's okay to step away. Your mental health is crucial to your long-term success.

21. Stay the Course: Once you've committed to a strategy or a client engagement, see it through. Constantly second-guessing yourself can undermine your effectiveness and credibility.

Till Tomorrow...

Get out of your own way.
