How know if you're intelligent or not

May 03, 2024 8:01 am

Hey there,

So last night, I got caught up.

I thought I'd be able to send this by 7pm yesterday but it turned out that

I had to be fully present.

You see, yesterday was Teclaire's burial ceremony and once the ceremony

was done I got caught up with her family.

Somehow I didn't factor that into my thinking.

Here's a couple for questions for you...

What is learning?

How should we define “intelligence”?

Why am I asking this?

I'll get to that in a moment.

But first let's get one thing crystal clear.

My goal as we dig into the Tribemaster Framework™ in the weeks and months to come is simple:

“I hope to increase your intelligence”

Does this mean that I hope to help you pass all future exams and tests?

Or that you sound smarter while arguing on the internet?

Answer this:

Who is more intelligent...

  1. The student who can recite the story of “The Good Samaritan” to a captivated audience but treats others poorly out in the world or…
  2. The student that doesn't even know the story, but treats others with kindness and respect?

How about...

  1. The group experts in germ theory that forget to boil their water when they travel to a places where the only available what is from a central stream or…
  2. The villagers there who boil their water and remain clueless about germs and microbes?

Who would you consider more intelligent?

Here's the answer..

#drumrollplease

It depends on what they want.

Here's the thing...

If the priority is to be a kind human, the student that is kind is more intelligent.

If the priority is to sound like a good human, the student with the golden-tongue, who just happens to be an a-hole to strangers is more intelligent.

If the priority is survival, the uneducated villagers are more intelligent than the experts....

Why?

Their behavior is more likely to get them what they want.

Stay with me.

Here are two stories I heard from Teclaire that will help to give more context to this:

Story 1:

Working with a boy that was low intelligence by nearly all standard testing methods...

Teclaire noticed that even though the boy didn't know the answers to the questions, he could answer them correctly.

He would listen closely to Teclaire's voice as she asked the questions.

This boy could guess the answer based on how the question was asked.

So a few things happened here:

First, the boy realized that if he answered correctly he could get what he wanted.

Then, he figured out a way to answer the questions correctly.

Story 2:

Working with another boy that was high intelligence by nearly all standard testing methods and types.

She also noticed that he was extremely OCD.

He wanted everything perfect, and he wanted to pass his tests so badly that he couldn't finish any of the tests he was taking.

His perfectionism caused him to keep circling back to each answer multiple times and run out of time.

This kid recognized that by testing well, he would get what he wanted.

But was unable to do it.

Question:

"Who is more intelligent...The boy that has figured out how to get what he wants or the boy that can't?

Here's the most liberating definition of intelligence that I've gotten so far

"Intelligence is the ability to get what you want."

You can find a million and one ways to convince yourself and others that you are intellectually superior to someone else.

But if you can't get what you want, who cares?

So given everything I've shared so far...

Within the context of this conversation, it's safe to say:

If it increases your ability to get what you want, it has made you more intelligent

Does university education make you more intelligent?

It depends on what you want.

Does a lack of higher education make you less intelligent?

It depends on what you want.

Do things that increase the probability that you get what you want and you increase your intelligence.

So…

If increasing your ability to get what you want is increasing your intelligence…

What is learning?

Simple…

Increasing the ability to get what you want means you have changed your behavior in certain circumstances.

So learning is: Same Circumstance, Different Behavior.

It doesn’t matter what you think you know...

If your behavior doesn't change given the same circumstance as a result of what you now know...

You haven't learned anything.

The Tribemaster Framework™ is designed to help you change your behavior in a favorable way.

“In a favorable way” depends on what you want.

The tools and resources available through the Tribemaster Framework™ will only benefit you if you are clear on what you actually want.

That's why the concept of Your #1Priority™ is so important.

I talk about it on page 86 in the Tribemasters Practice. CLICK here to get yours if you don't have a copy yet.

Your #1Priority is a value based distillation of what you really truly want in life and at the market place.

And as long as your goals ad activities move you closer to it each day, you generally find that you are happier and fill more fulfilled.

Let's bring this home...

Each time you read, watch, or listen to something from Tribemasters that left you feeling smarter...

Think deeply about whether or not that’s true.

Better yet...

Make it true by taking a few moments to determine how you are going to change your behavior and in which circumstances it applies...

And then follow through on it.

THEN…

Share what changed to lock it in.

Do that and you have definitely learned something and increased your intelligence.

Till tomorrow...

Get out of your own way.
