[TDM] How to be a great coach

Feb 26, 2022 7:01 am

Hey there ,

A few day's back I had a conversation with a client of mine.

The conversation in question is one I have pretty frequently with everyone I work with closely...

And it's about balancing what they want from me with what I know that they need to get to their critical next level...

You see...

The thing with relationships is...

If you do a good job at it...

You create a side effect called expectations...

The challenge is that no matter what you do...

You are not in control of how those expectations are defined in the mind of your client..

So question:

How do you manage expectations that you can't control?

Answer: You don't.

You manage the balance of trust in the relationship and not their expectations.

Why?

Because if you do a great job managing the balance of trust...

What happens is that you deepen the trust between you.

And if you deepen the trust...

You can pretty much get away with not meeting their personal expectations in relationship with you.

How do you do this?

The simplest way is to practice what Dan Sullivan refers to as the referability habits:

  1. Do what you say you will do
  2. Finish what you start
  3. Always say please and thank you
  4. Show up on time

Ridiculous right?

But these 4 habits have been known to work miracles in building trust.

Till tomorrow.

Get out of your own way.
