How to get them to do what you want

Jan 23, 2024 7:55 am

You've got to be a certain way with people so you can inspire three key results...

First...you want them to pay attention to you..

Second...You want them to do what you recommend...

And third...you want them to become your evangelists and go convert their friends and family to your way of thinking.

Achieve this with leaders and people with influence and you are good as gold.

Hey there!

So yesterday we did some justice to how are to think and be in order to create the first of the three results listed above.

Today...

We're all about: CONDOMS!

*pausing for dramatic effect*

Okay....okay...

So we're not talking about condoms...

#sideeye

But we are talking about Trust.

If commitment is the currency of attention...

(check yesterday's email if you don't know what I'm talking about)

Trust is the currency of indoctrination.

Lemme put that up so you can read it again....

If commitment is the currency of attention, trust is the currency of indoctrination.

*pausing to let it sink in*

Indoctrination is vitally important when you want someone to choose to act on your recommendations in spite of their fears and concerns.

Now...

Don't get me wrong.

I am fully aware that there are negative connotations to the word "indoctrination"..

It's not a word you should be afraid of.

Indoctrination means the deliberate installation of beliefs, values, attitudes or doctrines into the minds of individuals or a group.

Some call it marketing...

Others call it parenting...

Some others call it social conditioning...

Peer pressure...

Call it what you will...

The fact is...

It's happening daily to you and the people you care about.

It's naïve to not at least try to understand it and how it happens, so you can be certain that your thoughts are actually your own...

And not those of someone who's agenda might not be in your own best interest.

I'll not be going deep into indoctrination dynamics today....

It's a huge subject on it's own...

But I'm going to offer you a shortcut that works online and offline.

Apply what I'm sharing with you today and you'll get an immediate improvement in the results you get with the people you want to influence.

Ready?

Let's dig in.

The foundation of all indoctrination is Frequency and Trust.

The more often you are exposed to an idea...

The more you normalize the idea...

My favorite book says..

Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God

Don't worry...

I'm not about to dump religion on you....

I just want to point out two things....

The power of frequency and context...

When you are first exposed to an idea that is contrarian to your current beliefs...

You first reaction more often than not is to reject it...

But if I provide context for the idea...

For instance the person sharing the idea with you...

Your resistance is lowered if it's someone you trust.

Trust is a function of two things:

  • Character: your track record for demonstrating a set of values and beliefs that your people see as important.

  • Competence: the degree of excellence at which you can consistently produce the results you say you can produce

Now the key thing to realize about this, is that for most people, trust is purely a matter of perception.

You can literally fake your way to a high level of trust with people.

We've seen it happen...

And no!

I'm not naming names...

You. Know. What. I'm talking. About.

The problem is it takes a lot to maintain that level of fakery...

Eventually you will be found out...

And when that happens...

God help you.

What I'd rather you do is to be the real deal.

Actually have true character and competence...

Then actively showcase it to your people through your communication...

How do you do that?

Simple...

Focus your communication online or offline around the following 7 themes...

In the Community Mastery Method, these 7 themes are called The Tribemaster's messaging matrix...

Here they are...

  1. Your personal philosophy
  2. Your personal Story
  3. Your lifestyle
  4. Your methodology
  5. Your results or results of your clients or both
  6. Questions
  7. Invites to experiences with you.

These themes when shared intentionally, showcase your character and competence.

And to be honest...

It doesn't matter if you're a parent trying to ensure your teenager eventually has some sense...

Or...

A President of a country looking to be elected for a second term..

These 7 themes when shared consistently and deliberately create buy-in.

And like I've shared before...

Once you have buy-in...

You don't need to sell. Your people will buy by default.

Now let's bring it all home.

Remember at the start...

I shared that indoctrination is about Frequency and Trust.

Flip that and work on the trust bit first.

Actively share from these 7 themes online in your posts and offline in your conversations.

And just simply frame these themes in ways that support the beliefs, values, attitudes or behaviors you want installed.

Do it frequently.

Your ideas will become their own.

And once it's their own...

They will happily act on it even if they aren't actively clear about why they are choosing to do what they are choosing to do.

WARNING: UNDERSTAND THAT THIS PUTS A LOT OF RESPONSIBILITY ON YOU. ABUSE THIS AND THE CONSEQUENCES ARE VERY SEVERE.

That's it for today.

Tomorrow...

I'll get into the 4 core things to focus on if you want to turn your people into your evangelists and have them go out to their friends and family and convert them to your way of thinking.

Till then...

Get out of your own way and play a bigger game than you've ever played before.
