Working hard will not get you the best

Hey there!

Years back I was the south south regional manager for Evergreen Pensions

(Now Oak Pensions).

Fun story:

I showed up for the interview because a subscriber to PowerIdeas™ felt I might be a great fit.

I did pretty well.

For some strange reason they didn't get round to checking my credentials.

I got started and pretty I was the go to guy for specific results.

Based on that I was recommended to PENCOM for a dual position: National Head of Benefits.

That's when they finally looked into my credentials and found I had a third class.

Unfortunately by then it was too late.

I was occupying a dual position..

That meant to fire me...

Everygreen Pensions and PENCOM had to agree.

#evillaugh

They didn't agree.

Anyways...

There was this guy with an MBA...

Let's call him Mbaguy...

Mbaguy had an MBA and was not afraid to put in long hours.

When it came to working hard...

Non of us could beat his record.

But when push came to shove...

When the stakes where high and results were needed fast...

Management didn't call Mbaguy...

They called me.

Here is the mental frame most people use to sell themselves:

“I’ll work really hard for this business”

Like Mbaguy...

It's admirable.

But pointless in the sense that the top 1% do not want you to work really hard for them unless you’re an hourly admin type.

Here is how you should be thinking about selling yourself.

“Do you want me to work hard for you? Or do you want to win?”

I legit felt like Harvey Specter when I wrote that.

I'll write it again just ços I like the feeling...

“Do you want me to work hard for you? Or do you want to win?”

These are two very, very different things.

And like the conversation we had yesterday about Rule 1...

It will lose the interest of the 99% and only the top 1% will be left.

And they will be interested.

Don't be Mbaguy.

Yes we admire people like Mbaguy are out there swinging their axe all day and night.

First to show up, last to leave.

And to be honest we root for them, because we want them to be rewarded for their effort.

But truth be told....

Mbaguy isn't who management calls when big things are on the line.

Checks aren't cut for hard workers..

They are cut for result producers.

When the men and women at the top of the field want to get shit done..

When they want to win...

They turn to the people that will get the job done the best...

Not the ones willing to work the longest hours.

Want to know the easiest way to get high quality results consistently?

I'll tell you all about it tomorrow...

You're gonna love it.

Till then...

Get out of your own way.
