One of the most profound things I've learned over the past 5 years is this...

The more you limit yourself...

The more you expand your options...

Crazy right?

You'd think that limiting yourself will reduce your options...but it doesn't.

A major belief that we've been sold is that limitations and constraints make us less creative...

Again...

Not true...

Deliberate limiting what we pay attention to...

Actually empowers us to...

Think differently...

Stay focused...

And actually be more productive and creative.

Case in point is a former slave named George Washington Carver...

When he was given the mandate to help poor negro farmers improve their wealth..

He didn't have a lot of resources...

So to maximize things...

He focused his research on the peanut...aka groundnut...

Over the course of his life he invented over 200+ uses for the peanut...

Including flour, paste, insulation, paper, wall board, wood stains, soap, shaving cream and skin lotion.

He experimented with medicines made from peanuts, which included antiseptics, laxatives and a treatment for goiter.

His success can be traced back to one thing:

His willingness to re-frame his beliefs and turn an impossible goal into inevitable success.

George learned many things about himself and his ability to deliver…but the biggest thing he discovered was the transformative power of self-enforced constraints.

Allow me to explain…

By intentionally setting limits for yourself…

By purposely reducing what you pay attention to and putting yourself in a straight jacket...

You invariably deliver better results than “keeping your options open.”

You expand you options literarily by NOT "keeping your options open"

And that's a key lesson we drove home yesterday at our implementation session at the Brand Acceleration Workshop...

Too many times...

In the name of "going global"...

We completely and totally over extend ourselves and as a result limit our options for success.

Yesterday...

Everyone on the program was challenged and pushed to the limits of their thinking about what's actually possible...

And how they thought about what they offered to the market and who they offered it to...

I believe you need that too...

It’s only by being challenged...

By being tested...

And pushed to your limits that you find out what you are really capable of.

That stretches us...

Forces us to overcome adversity...

Tests our character and commitment...

And inspires us to turn constraints into great success stories.
