Te Awamutu Concerts Alive! are very pleased to present Trio Obscura, who will perform an amazing programme for us, at St John's Anglican Church on Sunday, 5th July 2026 at 2pm. Please diary the date now!

Many of you will know pianist Sarah Watkins from our previous concerts, she is a prolific and gifted collaborator and currently lectures in music at Auckland University. Bede Hanley is the principal oboist with the Auckland Philharmonia, has performed internationally and is in demand as a soloist. Robert Ashworth is principal viola also with the Auckland Philharmonia and has been a guest principal violist for orchestras around the world.

Our high calibre performers add authenticity to the programme which includes diverse international pieces from across the centuries with August Klughardt's beautiful ‘Schilflieder’ (Song of the Reeds) 'Five Fantasy Pieces' (op.28), American composer Alyssa Morris with 'The Big Questions', Loeffler's Two Rhapsodies and finally Kiwi composer Janet Jennings with her evocative Five Emotional States.

Trio Obscura lives up to its name because music for oboe, a viola and a piano is surprisingly rare. This programme showcases the wonderful musicality and lyricism that emerges when these three instruments combine with talent and creativity.

We count our lucky stars that talented, professional musicians like the Trio Obscura are enthusiastic to share their love of performing wonderful live music with us, here in Te Awamutu.

NB Don't forget a couple of weeks before this event, we are hosting Te Awamutu Brass Band in concert on Sunday 21st June at 2pm at St Johns Anglican Church.

We would love to see you at one or both of these special concert events that are arranged by volunteers for everyone's enjoyment. In an era of global instability, come and meet-up with friends old and new, for afternoons full of high-quality, live classical music.
