GameStop vs Amazon

[Case Study] Gamestop—the previously dominant brick and mortar store—is going through a transformation. With new leadership, no company debt, and a war chest of more than a billion dollars in cash, their focus is now largely on technology and eCommerce.

"New normal" shopping

The lessons of building a newsletter

3 months ago I pivoted my newsletter to make it product design-focused and the results have been great.

I started pm.list on July 6th in 2020 to curate the most relevant product articles and send them daily (now, it's weekly) to my subscribers. I needed to get to know product people and keep myself up to date in the field I had interested in.

After a whole year of ups and downs, but consistently sending out emails, my main takeaways were:

  1. Curation doesn't mean just filtering down based on self-judgment. It means prioritization to what readers want/need to take action within a given context.
  2. The number of subscribers is just an ego-driven number.
  3. Consistency doesn't mean "be there every day no matter what". It means committing to what you set out to do and keeping up with what you promised your audience: offer value.
  4. Listening to your readers/users' needs doesn't mean just sending out a survey and expect hundreds of responses. One face-to-face conversation is worth way more than one survey response when building something.
  5. Starting with a niche is always more valuable than spray and pray to see who gets what you offer.
  6. Last, great margins don't necessarily mean you're building something that matters. If your users are not achieving their goals, you still have a long way to go.

🩸PRODX has the goal to provide designers with a more solid business foundation through curation of case studies and other articles.

Since I started following the design community in Vancouver, BC, I noticed that indeed it is common to see conversations on the importance of the product design role on the decision-makers table, but there are also challenges on how to translate that into an action plan towards making design a strategic pillar.

Although Vancouver is an emerging tech hub, there's plenty of space for improving designers' business skills.

So, why not contribute to making it happen?
