post of the week 💊

“Hi, my name is JP Paiva and I’ve been digitally sober for 6 days.”

We are all digitally ill and I’m quite scared of where this will take us to.

Last week I decided to give a break on my so badly spent “non-valuable digital time.” So every time I consciously caught myself scrolling up and down somewhere, I asked myself: does this add any value to my life? Action plan: “Unfollow”. “Leave group”. “Turn off notification”.

I shut down my IG account, unfollowed Linkedin profiles that literally add no value to my career or goals, left useless Whatsapp groups and turned off all my phone notifications.

You’ve probably heard of the “TikTok Generation”, right? Well, Instagram wants to compete against them by offering more value to what they call “the creators”. Business-wise? Beautiful. The natural strategy to follow. Adapt, build and keep growing. Human-wise? Scaring.

The pandemic is teaching us many lessons about how we humanize AND dehumanize technology. For the good and for the bad. What else should happen to force us to add a more human-centred approach to solve digital illness?

I truly believe Designers will be the main drivers in this complex war zone full of “ego-diggers”. I’m also quite excited to see how big techs will cover this topic.

We can do more than just a short video saying “hey, You're tapping too fast. Take a break”. Let’s be honest.

Please, consider digital-detox. 🤘🏻
