Are you giving CPR to the wrong patient?

A while back, I had a client who was frustrated with me.


We were discussing solutions for his business, and I gave him different answers depending on the situation.


To him, it felt inconsistent—maybe even like I was making things up as I went.

But I wasn’t.


I quickly realized what was missing in our conversation: context.


Business owners naturally see their business from the inside, but the outside perspective is different—and often more revealing.


That’s actually one of the biggest benefits of working with a coach.

As they say, you can’t read the label from inside the bottle.


I gave my client this example:

Imagine a patient seeing a cardiologist.


If they’re in the clinic for a routine visit, the doctor asks about diet, exercise, and lifestyle.


If they’re in the ER having a heart attack, none of that matters—the doctor jumps straight into CPR.


Different situations. Different responses.


If the doctor starts talking about diet while the patient is coding? That’s dangerous.



If the doctor starts doing chest compressions on a healthy patient in the clinic? That’s insane.


The same is true in business.

The right move depends on where you are and what’s happening.


Are you in the "marketing room" or the "sales room"?

Is your audience a cold lead, warm lead, or hot lead?

Is your business in growth mode or survival mode?


Without context, you might be giving CPR to someone who’s perfectly fine.


So, how do you make sure you’re making the right decisions in the right context?

1- Step back—look at your business like an outsider would.


2- Define the "room" you're in before taking action (marketing, sales, operations, etc.).


3- Get an external perspective—someone who can see what you might be missing.


Because sometimes, the best next step isn't obvious from the inside.
