đźź© How to Guarantee Failure, part 3
May 22, 2025 1:51 pm
Hi ,
Busy, Tired, and Still Going Nowhere? This Might Be Why.
[Reminder: These are 7 habits you should avoid if success actually matters to you.]
Yesterday’s email unpacked the invisible habits that slowly sabotage your progress — like waiting for perfect conditions, avoiding discomfort, and breaking promises to yourself.
If you missed it, you can read it here.
This email is the 3rd one in our Inversion series.
Here is a quick review to refresh your mind.
Inversion Method:
- Step 1: Ask how to guarantee failure.
- Step 2: Make the list.
- Step 3: Flip it.
- Step 4: Follow the flipped version — and success becomes your default, not your dream.
Today, let’s talk about a more dangerous trap: the illusion of progress.
It’s when you feel exhausted, overworked, full of ideas…
And yet somehow, nothing important actually moves forward.
These next 7 habits will keep you in that exact place — busy, but stuck.
If you want to guarantee failure (or at least burnout), follow them closely.
7 More Ways to Guarantee Failure
1- Prioritize looking successful over being successful.
Impressing strangers > building something real. Appearances win. Depth loses.
2- Avoid the work that actually matters.
Stay in motion, not progress. Always “doing” — rarely advancing.
3- Say you’ll do something, then don’t.
It erodes trust with others. But more importantly, with yourself.
4- Do what everyone else is doing.
Blend in. Follow trends. Conform. That way, you’ll always get average outcomes.
5- Do your best — not what it takes.
Tell yourself, “At least I tried.” But deep down, you know you didn’t do what was required.
6- Talk more. Do less.
Discuss your goals. Post about them. Announce your intentions. Never actually follow through.
7-Start something new every week. Finish nothing.
Live in a cycle of fresh starts. Uninformed optimism. Then burnout. Then repeat.
Flip the Script
If you want real progress — the kind that compounds over time — do the opposite:
Focus on being successful, not looking the part.
Do the things that actually move the needle — especially the ones you’re avoiding.
Say less. Do more.
Be willing to do what others won’t.
Don’t just “do your best.” Do what’s required.
Finish what you start. Stick with it long enough to get good.
Define yourself by your follow-through, not your intentions.
Success often isn’t about more effort — it’s about better focus.
And most people are focused on the wrong things.
Tomorrow, we’ll talk about how some people manage to repeat the same mistakes for years — and how to escape that cycle for good.
For now, ask yourself:
Am I working on what matters — or just working?
