Years ago, I was at a networking event when someone asked me the simplest question in the world:


“So, what do you do?”


I froze.


Not because I didn’t know - I knew exactly what I did.

But as I started talking, I could see their eyes glaze over.


I explained.

I clarified.

I even tossed in some phrases I’d heard other people use online, hoping one would stick.


By the time I stopped talking, they smiled politely and said:


“Cool… sounds interesting.”


Then they walked away.


That moment stuck with me.


Here’s the thing: the clearer you are about what you do, the easier it is for others to believe you can help them.


But most professionals - especially the really good ones - overcomplicate their message.


Why?


Because when you’re deep in your craft, you start stacking language.

You talk about methods, philosophies, frameworks.

You try to capture the full depth of your value.


And in the process… you lose people.


They don’t need your resume.

They need a reason to care.


That’s why one of the first things I look at with clients is how they answer this deceptively simple question:


What do you do?


Not in 4 paragraphs.

Not in industry jargon.

Not in some vague “I help people thrive” way.


But clearly. Powerfully.

In language that makes someone go:


“Wait, tell me more about that.”


When you get this right, everything else becomes easier:


  • Your website starts working
  • Your leads stick around longer
  • Referrals finally get what to say about you

because you finally know how to answer it.
