🟩 How I tricked myself into showing up every day
Mar 29, 2025 1:56 pm
Hi ,
A few days ago, I shared the story of the promise I made to my daughter:
To exercise every day for a year.
I kept that promise.
510 days straight, actually.
But here’s something I didn’t mention…
We all set goals like that.
“I want to write every day.”
“I want to make cold calls every week.”
“I want to meditate more.”
“I want to post consistently.”
But what do we actually mean when we say that?
When I told my cousin about my goal of exercising every day, he hit me with one of his classic no-BS questions:
“What do you mean by exercise?
How do you know when you’ve done it?
Like… if I just raise my arm four times, does that count?”
Ruthless.
But fair.
He’s a big believer in this idea:
If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.
I love him for that.
And I’m happy to say—I had an answer.
One that even he approved of.
His approval was a big personal win for me. (Don’t tell him!)
I told him I had a minimum success criterion.
If this thing happens, the day’s commitment is fulfilled.
For me, it was simple:
I have to sweat. Every day.
That was it.
Some days, it was a full hour at the gym.
Some days, yoga.
Some days, a quick round of jumping jacks in my living room.
As soon as the sweat rolled down the back of my neck—I was done.
Anything after that was bonus.
That simple rule made consistency possible.
That first drip of sweat became a rush of success.
Honestly, some of the happiest moments of my life.
So let’s apply it.
Not just “write every day”…
→ Write 300 words.
Not just “do outreach every week”…
→ Make 25 cold calls.
Not just “get healthier”…
→ Walk 5,000 steps.
You get the idea.
You know when you’re done.
You can stop—or keep going and stack bonus reps.
Either way, it’s a win. And you earned it.
Your turn:
1- What’s something small and doable you want to commit to?
2- And how will you know when the day’s version is done?
3- Want some help with accountability?
Hit reply and tell me. I really want to know.
