Hi ,

Have you ever had a role model whose advice was so… unique… that it made you question everything?

Well, let me introduce you to my “mentor” in achieving goals: Homer Simpson.

You see, Homer is a man of many talents, but perhaps his greatest achievement was winning the award at his high school reunion.

Various people would be called one by one and were presented an award for their achievements in business, science and contributions.

At some point and to everyone’s surprise they announced Homer’s name for the most weight gained since high school.

They asked him “Homer, what is your secret?”

With boundless enthusiasm and a proudly delusional sense of validation he said: “I discovered another meal between breakfast and brunch!”

And that’s the moment that I knew I have found my new role model.

Let’s break down Homer’s foolproof strategy for “success” in gaining the most weight:

1. The Extra Meal Philosophy: Who says three meals a day is enough? Homer found a way to squeeze in an extra meal between breakfast and brunch. Because why settle for three meals when you can have four? or 5? or eight??

2. Avoiding Stairs at All Costs: Elevators and escalators are a gift, and Homer knew it. Why take the stairs when you can minimize calorie burn and maximize comfort?

3. Donuts as a Food Group: Homer’s love for donuts is legendary. He made them a cornerstone of his diet, reminding us all that there’s always room for dessert.

4. Perseverance in Eating: Even when full, even when uncomfortable and in pain, Homer kept eating. His commitment to overindulgence was unmatched, showing a level of “perseverance” that would make any goal-setter proud. In fact that’s how the title of bottomless pit was bestowed upon him.

His strategy is foolproof.

Works for everyone.

Kids, grandparents, Olympians—it’s universal.

Your past doesn’t matter.

Your age doesn’t matter.

Your gender doesn’t matter.

It simply works.

Now, as much as I admire Homer’s approach… I also admire someone at the complete other end of the wisdom spectrum… the late great Charlie Munger.

Among other things, he was famous for his Mental Models.

What are Mental Models?

A mental model is a simple way to understand how something works.

I want to introduce you to one of my favourite mental models: Inversion

Inversion Mental Model has 3 steps.

They are simple and accessible to anyone.

1. Instead of asking "How do I succeed?" ask "How do I guarantee failure?”

2. Identify all the wrong actions you can take. All the flawed behaviours you can have. All the off-target paths you can choose. Make a list!

3. Now look at your list and … do the opposite. Your most logical and easy to implement strategy is to simply avoid those things.

"Invert, always invert. Many hard problems are best solved when they are addressed backward. Instead of looking for ways to be brilliant, focus on avoiding stupidity.” - Charlie Munger

In other words, take the road less stupid.

Now you know what not to do.

So, if Homer’s strategy is a roadmap to weight gain, then doing the opposite must be the roadmap to weight loss.

1. Extra Meal Philosophy → INVERT → Eat less.

2. Avoiding Stairs at All Costs → INVERT → Move more.

3. Perseverance in Eating → INVERT → Quit! Stop eating before you’re full.

4. Donuts as a Food Group … can’t argue with that one … I’m kidding.

You know what to do.

Or actually, what NOT to do.

Stay on that plan and you’ll see progress.

In the end, progress over perfection means learning from the wrong ways as much as the right ones.

So next time you feel stuck, just ask yourself: “What would Homer do?”

Then do the opposite… and progress will follow.

Even if it’s not perfect.

Progress comes from avoiding obvious mistakes—not chasing perfection.

That’s how you fuel the fire within.
