Hi ,
If I had this experience, I’m willing to bet I wasn’t the only one.
And if you’re doing anything remotely similar in your business — even unintentionally — it could be quietly turning people off before you ever get a chance to help them.
Here’s what happened:
I was genuinely excited about this event.
Clicked the link.
Filled the form.
Ready to roll.
Then it hit me with:
“Please confirm your email address.”
Okay.
Annoying, but fine.
Then it said:
“Thanks for signing up for our newsletter.”
Wait… what?
I didn’t sign up for your damn newsletter.
I signed up for the event.
The one you promoted.
The one I was looking forward to.
And guess what?
No event email.
No Zoom link.
No calendar invite.
No nothing.
I followed up.
Their response?
“Oh, we said on the page you’ll get the info later.”
…You expect me to read?
I’m a skimmer.
Like most people.
…You expect me to pay attention?
I have things to do.
Your event announcement in my feed was an interruption by itself.
I wanted to quickly sign up and get back to my thing.
…You expect me to block time in my calendar myself?
Why?
Because you couldn’t be bothered to send an event invitation or make it automated like most others do?
At best, this was lazy.
At worst, it felt scammy.
Now I’m wondering:
Was this even real?
Or just a lead grab dressed up as an event?
And this is what I want to warn you about:
You might be doing this, too.
Maybe not on purpose.
Maybe not this obviously.
But if your systems ask people to jump through hoops…
If your follow-up is an afterthought…
If your “easy” way is actually more work for them…
Then you’re bleeding trust.
And trust is hard to earn back.
Your move:
Pick one of your client-facing processes — ideally a lead gen one.
Walk through it like a distracted, impatient, skeptical version of your ideal client.
Then ask:
Where am I making this harder than it needs to be?
What message is this really sending?
Because from their side?
It’s the little things that turn curious into suspicious.
