🟩 Why I didn’t trust her - and what it taught me

Hi ,

I had a networking call booked on my calendar.


Everything seemed normal at first.

Friendly hellos. Some light small talk.


But pretty quickly, I realized what was really going on.

She wasn’t here to connect. She was here to pitch.


Now, let me be clear, I don’t mind being sold to.


Actually, I like it.

I’m fascinated by sales and always want to learn more.


But this?

This rubbed me the wrong way.


Because I hadn’t given her permission.


She talked a lot about honesty and transparency…

But to me, the trust was already broken.


Not because she made a pitch.

But because she skipped the steps.


She was talking at me, not with me.


And I left that call reminded of something I’ve seen over and over — in myself, in clients, in marketing everywhere:


Selling isn’t about saying the right words.
It’s about creating the right feelings — in the right order.


I think about it like an emotional journey.


And if we rush it, we lose people.


Step 1: They need to feel seen and heard.

Not just “targeted” - actually acknowledged.

This part isn’t about us. It’s about them.


Step 2: When they feel seen, then they can feel understood.

Now we can talk about our ideas, our approach, our solution.

But even this is still a service - not a spotlight moment.


Step 3: Only then, if they’re still with us, do we talk offers.

This is where they need to feel safe.

Safe with us. Safe with the choice. Safe to say yes.


Seen. Understood. Safe.


Three emotional beats that make everything else work.


The call I was on?

She missed all three.

But instead of just getting annoyed, I used it as a reminder:


If someone checks out, it’s not always because of the offer.
It might be because the emotional order was off.

Before we earn a yes,

we have to earn their safety.
