Want a brutally honest way to test if your message is working?
Open your website.
Set a timer for 3 seconds.
Then close the tab.
Now answer this:
In those 3 seconds, would a stranger know
what you do, who it’s for, and why it matters?
Most people fail this test.
Not because they’re bad at what they do —
but because their message asks too much of their reader.
Here’s what usually happens:
- The headline is clever, not clear
- The subhead is vague and filled with industry-speak
- The offer takes three scrolls to explain
- The real hook is buried under a pile of context
And while all that might make sense to you,
your audience isn’t going to work that hard.
Especially if they’ve never heard of you before.
Clarity in 3 seconds isn’t about dumbing down your work.
It’s about giving people a quick, confident “yes” that keeps them reading.
“Yes, this is for me.”
“Yes, they understand my world.”
“Yes, I want to know more.”
That’s the job of your message above the fold.
If someone has to decode what you do — they’ll leave.
If someone feels seen within seconds — they’ll stay.
Want to test this even more honestly?
Show your homepage to someone outside your industry.
Give them 3 seconds, then ask,
“What do you think I do, and who do you think it’s for?”
If their answer is off — your message is off.
Because if a stranger doesn’t get it,
a lead won’t either.
