Hi ,
Years ago, I had a coaching client—let’s call him Jordan—who came to me completely burned out.
Smart guy.
Ambitious.
Doing all the “right” things… or so he thought.
He said, “I just need to be more efficient. I’m wasting time somewhere.”
So I asked him to walk me through his day.
Every hour was color-coded.
Every task was labeled.
He had automations, routines, shortcuts, and apps for everything.
He wasn’t wasting time.
He was just investing it in the wrong things.
That’s when I hit him with this:
“You don’t need to be more efficient.
You need to be more effective.”
Efficiency is seductive.
It makes you feel responsible.
Productive.
Like you’re moving.
But if you’re not working on the right things…
You’re just sprinting toward the wrong finish line.
Jordan wasn’t inefficient.
He was making incredible progress… in the wrong direction.
So we threw out his optimized calendar and started asking a different question:
“What would make everything else easier or irrelevant?”
That one shift changed everything.
His schedule got lighter.
His results got stronger.
And most importantly—he started enjoying his business again.
So if you’ve been optimizing for efficiency, here’s a better question to ask:
What would change if you optimized for effectiveness instead?
