Hi ,
A few years ago, I was talking to a friend who was going through something heavy.
He was under a lot of stress — not just a mild background hum, but the kind that takes over your day.
We had already talked through some possible ways forward. A few practices, some steps he could try that would likely ease the pressure.
But he said, “No, I think I need to see a therapist first. I need to understand the root cause of all this. Maybe something from childhood.”
That didn’t sit right with me.
Not because therapy is bad — far from it.
But because he already had options.
He had a few clear things he could start doing today that would likely make life feel lighter.
So I said to him:
“Who cares about the root cause…
…if you already have something that can help right now?”
Still, he wasn’t convinced.
So I gave him an example.
I said, “Imagine a doctor and a patient. And the patient has some heart issues.”
“Sure,” he said.
“So what kind of questions do you think the doctor asks?”
He gave me the usual ones — do you smoke? How’s your diet? Are you exercising?
All valid questions.
“Right,” I said. “Those are the questions you ask in the clinic.
But what if it’s the ER?
What if the patient has just had a heart attack?”
There was a pause.
In that moment, you don’t stop and ask about lifestyle habits.
You stabilize. You intervene. You act.
Then you can go find the root cause later.
It’s the same with our emotional, mental, and business challenges.
Sometimes, you don’t need to understand why things are the way they are.
You just need to start doing the thing that helps.
Then when the crisis passes, you’ll have space to reflect and explore more deeply.
