Hi, !
It's been a rough few weeks...
In addition to the trials of parenthood and the pressure of writing deadlines and the stress of work, we had one disaster after another strike the Perez household.
We were in the process of remodeling our backyard (see below!) when the landscaper found a leak in the septic tank. Long story short, we had to completely uproot the septic system and switch to sewer (which, if you didn't know, is crazy expensive 😭). After that debacle, we finished the yard (yay!).
What do you think? Our yard is super small, so we haven't ever had a great place for the kids to run around. We got synthetic turf put in (a.k.a FAKE GRASS!), which requires very little maintenance and it won't grow and become a jungle like our yard used to be 😂
Then, last week, my 2-year-old got a bad stomach bug (we got the whole family tested for covid just in case, and they came back negative, thank goodness). Three days after that, she was puking again. She recently started daycare, so I'm sure her immune system was just freaking out (poor little quarantine baby... lol). Oh, and also, BOTH our cars broke down. IN THE SAME DAY. Seriously. So many people in the past week have said, "Well, when it rains, it pours!" It's been a tough time for us, but I hope things have been better for you!
It got me thinking about book characters (hey, you draw inspiration from anything, right?). It's interesting how we enjoy reading about conflict and turmoil. For example, while reading romance, we want the couple to get together, but once they are and they're happy, the plot is kind of boring! (see my writing segment below for more 😊)

This segment is for those of you who are writing and looking to improve! Please keep in mind I am not an expert by any means, but I do have a lot of experience that I would love to share with you! 🙂
This week's tip is on: Conflict!
A happy reader is a bored reader... 😂 But no, really! There must always be conflict or your reader will get bored! There always has to be an obstacle in the way of your character getting what they want. I've been told in many workshops that you should consider what your main character's greatest fear is - and then make that happen. Seriously, our job as writers is to torture our characters and make their worst nightmares come to life. Sad, but true! 😂
