Today's Devotional - January 15th

Life tends to either be smooth sailing or very difficult. The smooth sailing can last for years, but it is not where growth takes place. Hagar was in a difficult place. She was experiencing the jealousy of her owner. She had what Sarai wanted. She had fertility. Her mistress Sarai made her life difficult and she wanted to flee from her. How often do we want to run from difficulties? They seem better in the rearview mirror.
God intervened by sending an angel. The angel gave instructions and a promise. The instructions were not very comforting, hence the angel also gave a promise. The instructions were to go back to her abusive mistress, and to submit to her. She probably thought, “Is this really what I am supposed to do? Am I supposed to submit to an abusive mistress?”
Throughout this encounter we see something marvelous about God. He sees our plight and He has compassion. We cannot say, “If God only knew,” or, “If God only cared.” He sees and knows. He sees and cares.
What struggle taxes your energies or dominates your thoughts? God sees and He cares. What storm are you in today? What conflict are you being returned to? What painful growing is ahead? Breath deeply and return to the struggle and rely on the God who sees and cares.
NOTE: If you or a friend are in an abusive situation please reach out for a full explanation of the teaching in the Bible regarding abuse. Neither I nor God advocate for abuse. – Pastor Jim
